There are notes in a different hand at the bottom of the manifest about each of
the passengers. These notes are included below. The notes seem to differ on some
of the information given on the manifest. Perhaps there was better translation
for the notes.
Nearly all of the manifests from this period for San Francisco have the names
recorded surname last. These names appear to have surname first, but there are
no commas between the surname and first name and they are used in the same order
in the notes.
1 "Rota Pietro says I have a third cousin in SF. I don't know what his name is. I
don't know where he lives. I don't know what his business is. I am going to
Los Banos Merced Co. I have a friend there Enrique Muzz??? (possibly ini).
Enrique Mazzoni is married and has a ranch; he has a vineyard. (The initial
vowel in Mazzoni's name looks like "u" in the first case and "a" in the second.)
I have $20. I wrote to the Merced Friend that I would like to come to America.
He replied 'Do as you wish.' As soon as I land I will write a letter to my Los
Banos friend telling him that I have arrived as he doesn't know that I have left
Italy. I think that without writing him a letter that he would give me work. I am
going to see whether I can get anything to do at my trade here in SF first as
blacksmith."
The following notes are recorded in order opposite to the names on the manifest so
I have put the notes in the order they appear.
3 "Pelegrinelli A??dio I have no relatives in US. I am a miner. I come to find work
in San Francisco. I have $15. I have a wife and 5 children in Italy."
2 "Pelegrinrlli Pasqualli Is a brother of Peligrinelli Amadio. He is also a miner.
He has $21. The same conditions apply to him as to myself."
