Transcriber's Notes:
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due
to the quality of original document.
Sex column contains sex for only the first 11 passengers. After that,
it is either empty or has notation for "First Cabin".
Occupation was listed as "Farmer" at the top of all pages with ditto marks
down whole page, by person writing names. Other occupations are written
over this in different handwriting.
The last column "Died on the Voyage" contains luggage information. No
deaths are evident on this list.
[ denotes a family or group traveling together with combined luggage,
and [___ denotes end of a group of passengers
"do" is often used as ditto in the luggage listing.
"ctg" and "contg" in luggage probably means "containing".
"&c" means etc. in luggage list.
Both Bbl and Bdl may mean bundle in luggage list.
Passenger 4 -- surname is Schmeiszer or Schmeifzer
Passenger 6 -- luggage -- Bag and Chest overwritten
Passengers 7, 8 and 9 -- occupation probably starts with S and is 3-5
letters. Could be Svt (maybe short for Servant).
Passenger 10 -- Line drawn through occupation.
Passengers 33 & 49 -- First name is V with 1-2 small superscript letters
which looks like M but with a " under it.
Passenger 33 -- Occupation is listed as what looks like Blackmaker, but
may be an error, and should be Blacksmith?
Passenger 39 -- Occupation listed as Farmer, but actually blank since at
top of new page. (Occupation was listed as "Farmer" at the top of all
pages with ditto marks by person writing names. Other occupations are
written over this in different handwriting.)
Passengers 62-68 -- Ra??er could be Ralmer or Rahner
Passenger 70 -- surname may be Borosey or Bowsey
Passenger 71 -- occupation might be Tailor, but the L is crossed like a
T, and I is not dotted.
Passenger 73 -- surname is either Goosmaern or Goosmaem
Passenger 82 -- surname may be de la Couture
Passenger 83 -- surname may be Gevens or Gevers
Passenger 86 -- occupation could be Paper maker, but the first letter
looks more like an R or B and the rest is hard to read
Passenger 89 -- Luggage has numbers overwritten, 1 or 2 beds and 1 or 2
guns.
Passengers 95 & 96 -- umlaut over O in surname
There is no #100 in the passenger list numbers
Passenger 102 -- occupation might be Joiner
Passengers 105, 113, 133, 182 -- umlaut over the U in surname
Passengers 151-154 -- surname is probably either Kramp or Kamp
Passenger 187 -- occupation listed as Farmer, since at top of page, but
crossed out (see #39)
Passenger 230 -- looks like Mush Michael or Mirsh Michael, or surname
could be written first
Passenger 233 -- occupation could be Servant (very similar to #7, 8, 9)
Passenger 234 -- looks like Gwen Fosd or Fost but hard to read
Personal Note:
Passengers 33-39 are ancestors of the transcriber of this donated list.
Their surname is actually Stumpf, not Stump. The Widow Stumpf [Anna Margaret
Rixen (Mrs. Adolph) Stumpf] and 6 of her children came over on this ship,
leaving the eldest son, Clemens Stumpf in Germany to take over the family
homestead in Sindorf, Kr Bergheim, Nordrhein, Prussia. Another son,
Reinhard, had come to the US earlier and claimed 160 acres in Cross Plains,
Wisconsin, where the family settled.
VIP Passenger #217
Mr. Adolph Sutro became mayor of San Francisco, California in 1894.
"Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro was born April 29, 1830. He was
well educated in the field of mining engineering. Sutro
arrived in San Francisco aboard the steamship California,
in 1850, and immediately engaged in trade, first in San
Francisco and, later, in Stockton." For more information
