I do further swear, that 9 passengers have died on the voyage. Sworn before me this 12th day of July 1847. (Signed) William Sprague. (Signed) ?, COLLECTOR.
List and Report of the Passengers in Ship New England from Havre to N. O.
Columns represent: surname, given name, age, sex, birth, allegiance. Allegiance column was marked Pennsylvanie for all the passengers, so that column will be eliminated here; however, it is known that at least two of the passengers settled in Texas.

Transcriber's Notes:
* This list has been made possible by the generous contribution of
Mr. Stale Eide and Charles Russell, Ph.D., and his wife Inger Russell
who has also contributed to the transcription. (See footnotes #11 and
#12 for more on the subject of Dr. Russell's project.)
The following information has been provided by Dr. Russell:
"In Norway, Elise had been editor of the emigration magazine 'Norge og
Amerika', probably the first woman editor in her country. In letters
she sent to the magazine after she arrived in Texas, she stated that
the voyage from Le Havre in France to New Orleans took 81 days. The
passengers had to provide their own food, and many ran out of
provisions days before they reached port. She and her Norwegian
associates shared their food with these others. Her ship was able to
hail and buy food from vessels heading east, but the quantities were
insufficient. This provoked Elise to write that the Captain, Robinson,
was 'not a real man,' - she believed he could have secured more provisions.
By boiling water and avoiding eating the occasional meals provided by the
ship she and her fellow Norwegians escaped dysentery, but she succumbed
to the disease in New Orleans and was ill with it through her steamboat
journey up the Mississippi and Red Rivers to Grand Ecore.
"Elise added that Captain Robinson left the ship as they approached New Orleans.
Presumably William Sprague took charge of recording the manifest, and he may
have sailed the ship up to New Orleans.
"Based on detailed accounts of the Ship New England supplied by Alan Stewart,
a volunteer at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine, and John G.
Arrison of the Stephen Phillips Memorial Library in Penobscot, Maine, I am
confident that we can say that the ship Elise crossed on was indeed the New
England described by these two researchers. (Note: The word "Ship"
specifically designates a vessel type; it carries three masts rigged with
square sails).
"One of the builders was (Thomas) Robinson, and the New York List, which gave
arrivals of ships at American ports, showed the arrival of Ship New England
at New Orleans July 10, 1847, which is the date that Elise gave for her
arrival. The ship was 594 tons and 131.4 x 30.5 (wide) x 15.2 ft. (deep).
Alan Stewart gave this quote: 'Launched Jan. 8, 1834. Built by Thomas D.
Robinson for Himself, Captain Thomas P. Stetson, John G. and Henry L.
Richardson, Alfred T. Thompson and Captain Samuel Swanton, master; owned
later by Messrs. Robinson, Swanton, and William Richardson. Capts. Swanton,
A. Lowell, and Timothy Batchelder.' "
The following further information on the Ship New England is from
Dr. Russell's correspondence with John G. Arrison, of the Stephen Phillips
Memorial Library, Penobscot, Maine, and derived from "Queens of the Western
Ocean," by Carl Cutler, about the packet vessels that sailed foreign and
coastal routes:
"Ship New England, 549 37/95 tons, built Bath 1833, rebuilt Bath 1846.
131'4" registered length, 30'4.5" registered beam, 15'2.25" registered
depth (of hold)...It received a new registration in Bath on
December 12, 1846...Its master was then listed as Alfred T. Robinson.
This certificate of registration is numbered 65 for the year 1846,
for the Bath Customs district. A copy of this may be obtained from
the National Archives.
"According to Cutler, the New England was sailing as a packet ship between
Boston and Savannah and possibly Natchez, New Orleans, and Havana, in
Samuel R. Allen's "Packet Line" beginning in 1837 with a Captain Davis.
In 1848, Cutler shows the New England sailing in the same "Packet Line"
between Boston and New Orleans, with Captain Alfred T. Robinson.
"The Maine Maritime Museum has a black and white reproduction of a painting
of Ship New England leaving Marseilles under S. Swanton as Master. Copies
of the reproduction can be obtained from the museum at lipfert@bathmaine.com
Phone (207) 443-1316, ext. 328."
Footnotes for individual passengers:
#5 age could be 20 or 21.
#11 surname spelled as found but should be Wærenskjold; he was the future
husband of passenger #12 Elise Tvede.
#12 Elise Tvede is the subject of a biography in progress by the historian
Charles Russell, Ph.D. Elise Tvede arrived in Texas in 1847 after she
"disembarked (on the Red River) from the steamboat she took from New Orleans.
The landing was at Grand Ecore which is four miles north of Natchitoches
(they pronounce it 'Nackatish'). All that is left of the landing is some
wharf pilings that stick up out of the river, but the place is well enough
known locally so that residents positively identify the location.
The steamboat was the 'St. Helena'." (Quotes from Dr. Charles Russell.)
#34 possibly the one who died May 29th, though that one was given the age of 21.
#56 though marked male, perhaps this was the wife and mother of this group,
but only a guess.
#63 same as #62.
#64 age could be 20 or 21 or 28.
#68 age 30 or 38.
#80 marked female.
#81-82 these are probably the parents of the baby born May 6th, giving the
mother's maiden name on the manifest.
#89 surname possibly spelled Salz or Sass but is overwritten so cannot be
certain of last 2 letters.
#92 another instance of a first name seeming male, but gender column marked
female.
#95 uncertain of second letter, looks like a.
#97-99 these are probably the family of the child who died June 25th, named
Theresia with a surname in that section of the manifest that definitely
looks like more like Biesingen.
#102-104 this is probably the family of the baby born June 24th, though the
surname is spelled differently in each of the sections. In the passenger
list section, it looks like Roeth though spelled Boos in the birth section.
#105 surname is probably Peter, but possibly there is a ditto mark before
the word Peter, to indicate the previous surname.
#108 age could be 20 or 21 or 28.
#110 surname spelled with the old-style double s, but is probably Lissont,
but Lifsont will be found in the surname index as well.
#113-118 no other information provided for these passengers.
#119 probably ditto mark for Baviere, but could be smudge. Gender not marked.
#130 gender dittoed for female, but Jost is probably a male name.
#137 smudged gender column but is probably male.
#159 gender possibly male.
#167-172 could be the family of the child who died May 17th,
named Barbara Schroepfer.
#169 gender is marked with ditto.
#179 age 27 or 37.
#191 age could be 24 or 34.
#198 age is marked with ditto so is probably 18, as the last passenger
is 18.
#200 age could be 30 or 31.
#217 age could be 20 or 28.
