Ship Mexican
I, John Deming do solemly, sincerely and truly *sware that the following List or Manifest, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the Duties of New York, contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Ship Mexican whereof I am Master, from Madeira.(signed) John Deming
Sworn to the Jan. 2 1843 before me A P Clunly *Callector (best deciphering of signature)
List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Ship Mexican whereof John Deming is Master, from Madeira burthen Two hundred twentyfive tons.
Columns represent: name, age in years, sex, occupation, country to which they severally belong, country to which they intend to become inhabitants, died on the voyage.
1 Alexander Riddell 40 Male Ship Master U.S. America U.S. America 2 Sarah Riddell 35 Female none U.S. America U.S. America 3 James Adams 30 Male Merchant U.S. America U.S. America (signed) John Deming Transcriber's notes: * The manifest was extremely legible. * The use of an asterisk indicates an error or omission made by the original recorder. * All the names above were written given name first followed by surname. * There are no entries under the "Died on the voyage" column, therefore, it was eliminated. * In the sworn statement, the word "sware" is transcribed as it is spelled, the correct spelling should be "swear". * The signature of the collector was made with large florishes and it appears that the last letter was continued into the beginning of the "C" followed by an "a" which the transcriber believes was a sloppy "o" in the title of Collector.
