Transcriber's Notes:
There is a discrepancy on the date. The cover page states that the ship arrived
25 November 1836, but on the manifest it gives a date of 23 November 1836.
In the Captain's statement the name of the ship is spelled both as McLellan and
Mac-Lellan.
#1 there is possibly a line drawn through the first passenger.
First name could be Anders or Andres. Surname possibly something like
Ro?ie? but some damage. No age recorded.
#8 surname looks like Stephahie.
#11-15 surname possibly Millius or Villius.
No information recorded for #12-15: note states "wife & 3 children".
#17 surname could be Perard.
#18-23 no information recorded for #19-23: note states "wife & 4 children".
#25-26 origin was written Suisse for #26, but for #25 was dittoed Bavaria,
though surname is the same.
#27-31 no information recorded for #28-31: note states "wife & 3 children".
#32 surname could be Sendermann or Lendermann.
#35 surname could be something like Rink or Ruck.
#37-41 no information recorded for #38-41: note states "wife & 3 children".
#47 surname possibly spelled Isrig or Issig, though the first letter
is not capitalized, and not at all certain it is even "I".
#48-55 surname could be Leber or Heber; no information recorded
for #49-55: written "wife & 6 children".
#56-59 no information recorded for #57-59: note states "wife & 2 children".
#62 surname could be Goldrich or Geldrich.
#63-66 no information recorded for #64-66: note states "wife & 2 children".
#69-71 no information recorded for #70-71: note states "2 children",
though the number 2 is in a slightly damaged area, and could be
some other number.
#74 surname possibly Dupuy or Dupery, but not certain. No first name recorded.
Or perhaps this was combined with #75-76.
#75-76 says "George & wife". Not certain if George is first or last name.
#82 surname possibly Lohmann.
#84 surname looks like Brandh or Brandli.
#86 surname looks like Mathurin. First name something like Barteleus.
#94 surname looks like Hen; does not seem to be any other letter after that.
#96 surname could be Dannhauer or Dauenhauer or similar; first name looks
like Mari.
#98 surname looks like Dunnet or Durnet.
#100-102 no information provided for #101-102: note states "& 2 children".
#103 surname could be Thiel or Phiel.
#104-105 surname could be Burtett or Burlett.
#110 surname possibly Guerden.
#112-117 no information provided for #113-117: note states "wife & 4 children".
#118 age could be 22 or 23.
#119 surname something like Lassain or Lassair or Lassaun or Lassauc.
#121 surname probably Rasch, possibly Basch.
#123 damage in area for age.
#125-127 note states "& 2 children".
#128-131 notes states "& 3 children".
#132 surname looks like Coste with accent on the e.
#133 no first name recorded.
#135 no age recorded.
#136 first name looks like Fis, or perhaps it is Frs.
#137 occupation could be merchant, but possibly a line drawn through the word.
#139 surname looks like Landry or Landrege. Also looks as if Landry may have
been written over Landreye. Origin different from the previous passenger
named Landry.
#140 surname looks something like Nichor or Vichon or Nichoz or variation,
but not certain.
#141-142 Mme. Perrault was traveling with a daughter; no information recorded
for the daughter.
#143 surname possibly spelled Hono?d. Damage over second last letter.
Correspondence 01/13/2004 passenger #60-61 Baumgartner
The Baumgartners are not directly related to my Keller family, but
Elizabeth Baumgartner Keller (Maiden name Steinman) is my ggrandmother. She
was first married to Conrad Baumgartner.
May 25, 1841 - Conrad Baumgartner (25 years of age) was married to Elizabeth
Steinmann (19 years of age) in St. Louis, Missouri by Father John P.
Fischer. Records found in the archives of St. Louis Cathedral (old).
Conrad's parents listed as: Wendelin Baumgartener and Johanna Hubert.
Elizabeth's parents: Jean Steinmann and Elisabeth Flore.
Signatures: Johan ? (unreadable), David Louis Augsbourg, Conrad
Baumgartner (Groom or his kin?) and other unreadable
Item from American Eagle, Friday 4/21/1843: "Conrad
Baumgartner, Architect, Draftsman & Surveyor, Respectfully informs the
public that he has opened an office at his residence at the corner of Second
and Jackson streets, Fort Pickering." (outskirts of Memphis, TN)
"Shelby Co., TN Marriages & Misc. Newspaper Clippings
1835-1840 - submitted by Helen Rowland. Item from "American Eagle", Friday,
May 30, 1845: "Married, at Fort Pickering, on the 22nd nst., by the Rev.
Michael McAleer, Mr. Joseph Keller, of Memphis to Mrs. Elizabeth Baumgartner
of the former place. '' This marriage is recorded at the Church of St.
Peter and St. Paul - record very old, very fragile and cannot be copied.
Memphis, TN census 1850 Agatha Baumgartner, 63, is living with the Keller
Family. Also a Mary Baumgartner, 8, and a Conrad Baumgartner, 6. Agatha's
birth place is given as Switzerland.)
In 1860 Memphis census none of the above are shown with Keller family, but
a Johannah Baumgartner, 3, and a Henry Keller,16, appear. (Was Conrad's
name changed, or?)
Tenn.State Library & Archives - THE MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL- p. 2, col. 7,
8/24/1861: " DIED: Mrs. Johanna Baumgardner, in her 76th year. Funeral
from the residence of Mrs. Jos. Keller, on this Saturday morning at 10
o'clock." (Conrad's mother was named "Johanna". See marriage record,
above.)
In the marriage book for Shelby County, Tennessee, on 4/11/1860 ), the
license for marriage of George Keller and Louisia Baumgartner is witnessed
by a Joseph Keller and a Mary L. Keller I believe this is George and
Joseph Keller may be brothers, and that Louisia is kin to Conrad and the
other Baumgartners that appear in the census as living with the Kellers in
1850 and 1860. Evelyn Wicke
