So help me God, H. Campbell Master.
Sworn to me this 11th April 1889 before me (signature illegible) Collector.
List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the Lake Ontario whereof Howard Campbell is Master, from Liverpool burthen 2922 tons.
Columns represent: Number, Name, Age in Years and Months, Sex, Calling, The Country of which they are Citizens, Native Country, Intended Destination or Location, No. of pieces of Baggage, Location of Compartment or space occupied, Date and cause of death, whether Visitors only, or intending to be permanent settlers. Since no passengers died on the voyage, I have omitted that column. The designations of Visitor or permanent settler have been abbreviated in the last column as V or P.

Transcriber's Notes:
Numbering: The list is numbered 1 through 22 for saloon passengers, then 1 through 33 for 2nd
Cabin passengers, then 1 through 134 for steerage passengers.. For clarity in the transcriber's
notes I have renumbered the passengers 1 through 197, with a blank line to separate Saloon,
2nd Cabin and Steerage.
One oddity is the number of passengers with the word "none" written in the baggage column.
I don't know what we are to assume if there is neither a number or the word none written in
that column.
I have shown the baggage on the same line as on the manifest. I assume that only one member of
each family was listed with the baggage for the entire family. Other manifests have shown all
the baggage for the head of the household.
In some instances, no country is listed for Native Country. I don't know if we can assume the
Country of which they are Citizens and Native Country would be the same.
The designations of Visitor or Permanent settler have been abbreviated in the last column as
V or P. If a passenger has neither designation, it is only because there was nothing in the
column.
See the notes below for some attempt at explaining what is written. I think the Captain got
confused as he wrote information. To make more sense of some of this, look at the information
either above or below the one you think may be yours.
3-5: The family is bracketed together, all headed for San Francisco, U.S. of A.
6-9: The family is bracketed together, all headed for Northwest Territory, Canada.
10-11: Bracketed together, both headed for Boston, U.S. of A.
27-28: Bracketed together, he from Ireland, she from England.
32-33: Bracketed together, though after Grace's name is a check, indicating ditto (from
England as is the previous person), Jane is from Scotland. I assume Siox City is
Sioux City.
37-40: Bracketed together, all headed for Boston, U. S. of A.
40: This is the bottom of a page, with a tear. The age could be 6 or 0.
41-42: Bracketed together, both head for Port Huron, Mich., U.S. of A.
43-44: Bracketed together, same surname, one from Scotland, one from England.
45: Yes, Cheyenne Wypeg is what is written as destination
50-53: Bracketed together, all headed for Boston, U.S. of A.
54: The surname could be Reeco.
66-69: Bracketed together, though I don't know why.
75-79: Bracketed together, headed for Philadelphia. Tabor is a neighborhood in Philadelphia,
though I can't find a Freemont County in the state.
82-87: Bracketed together, all same surname, some headed for New York, some going on to
Chicago. I can't believe that children ages 4, 3 and 1 are going off alone to Chicago.
88-91: 88 and 89 are bracketed together, 90 and 91 are bracketed together. However, both of
a pair are not written as headed for the same place. Guelph is in Ontario, Canada.
96-97: A tear in the bottom of this page, so can only see last number of age.
98-101: Bracketed together.
108: Olga Mechank, age 14 could be my grandmother, even though the passenger is listed as
male and a mechanic. She appears to be traveling with another Russian; both are going
to Chicago. One of her older brothers, Bernard Mechanik, came to the US in 1885 on the
Ethiopia. He came to Chicago where the rest of their family ended up. The family used
the name Mechanic in Chicago. I note that this could be my grand-mother. Every record
I have found for her including 3 censuses, with other family members listed, and my
father's birth certificate, indicate different years for her birth. She could have been
born anywhere from 1871 to 1879. From census records I've determined that her parents,
another brother and a sister came in 1889 or 1890. She told me the family was from
Kovno, Russia (now Kaunas, Lithuania), that her father was a miller blinded in a
dynamiting accident at the mill, and the family traveled to doctors all over Europe to
try to restore his eyesight. His sight was never restored. Both he and his wife died in
Chicago. Perhaps Grandma was sent ahead to be with Bernard. One of many mysteries in
the Mechanic branch of my family. I ask anyone with information on Olga (Goldie)
Mechanic Mack or other members of the Mechanic family to contact me.
111: The given name is probably Magnus, but it is written Mangus, or even
Mangns, since the n and u as written look the same.
112-120: Bracketed together, headed for St. Louis, U.S. of A.
121-122: Bracketed together, headed for Mil(l)waukee, U.S. of A.
127-132: Bracketed together.
133: Destination should be spelled Joliet, but Jolliet is on the manifest.
134-136: Bracketed together, headed for Chicago, U.S. of A.
137-138: Bracketed together, headed for St. Louis, U.S. of A.
139-142: Bracketed together, headed for Chicago, U.S. of A.
151-152: Bracketed together, not headed for same place.
153-160: Bracketed together, headed for New York, U.S. of A.
161-163: Bracketed together.
164-166: Bracketed together, one check mark in baggage column, may indicate none, as that is
what was written for the previous set of passengers, and a check mark seems to indicate
ditto.
173-174: Bracketed together.
177-179: Bracketed together, no headed for same place.
186-188: Bracketed together, one to U.S. of A., two to Winnepeg.
190-197: First, there are 3 blank lines between 189 and 190 (or 134 and 135 as they were
originally numbered). This sets them apart. These passengers have no space designation
other than 1 big check mark for the group. That seems to indicate they were also in
steerage. No ages or Sex listed for any of these. There is a line drawn diagonally
through the age column with the notation U.S.of A's. Written once across the remaining
columns is Cattlemen Returning to New York.
