I have tried to transcribe this list to the best of my ability and have tried to make good transcriber notes, but in some cases, it was impossible to do so. * The original recorder has spelled out male and female on the original manifest but for spacing reasons, I the transcriber have entered only f and m. * The spelling "Penselvania" is as the original recorder has spelled it. * Since there was only 2 deaths listed, the column "Died on the voyage" has been omitted for spacing reasons. Following are those who died during the voyage. #52 August Semione, died the 6th of April. #171 Martha Pah?ke, died the 26th of April. Passenger Notes: * Passenger # 3 August Griffel could also be August Grissel. * Passengers 13 & 14, Julius and Emilie Bisto?v. There is a black line covering the last ? making the letter unreadable. * Passenger #20, The name of the town or country is very faint and unreadable. * Passenger # 25 Friederich Ca?ilska could also be Cabilska. * Passengers #43 & 44, Phillipe and Christian Leonhard could also be Phillipe and Christian Leonhand. * Passenger #46 Georg Sch?l has a black line covering the ? letter. * Passenger #47 Michael Kr?iger could be Kreiger, the black line continues down thru this surname making the ? letter undecipherable. * Passengers #59 & 59 has two ? in the surname that could be an i and an s, Robert Veilhise and Albert Veilhise but the letters are very faint and run together making them hard to read. * Passenger #61 Lorenz En?rs could possibly have 2 letters that are unreadable and the name could be Enders, it looks like the upward swing of a d and an e but not sure enough to list. * Passenger #65 Bernh. could be short for Bernhart or Bernhard and the surname could be Gendes as it looks like an upward swing on the ? letter that looks like other small d's on the list. * Passengers #90, 91, 92 and 93, Ludwig So?h, Johanne So?h, Johanne So?h and Henriette So?h has a black line completely covering the ? letter. Possible names could be Sonh, Sogh, Soch or Sosh * Passenger # 94, Carl Gro?on could be Carl Groson or possible two letters are covered by the black line and it could be Carl Grosson. * Passenger #98 surname could be Heinz, again because of a black space on the original manifest, the 3 middle letters are obscured and unreadable. * Passengers #133 thru 137 the Na?vah family has a black line thru the surname but the ? letter looks like it could be a D as the left side of the upward swing looks like how the original recorder has written that part of a D. The second letter could also be an O as in No?vah. * Passengers #138 thru 142 the D??insky could be Delinsky, due to a black line running down thru the surname column, the 2 ? letters are unreadable. * Passenger $ 147 & 148 August and Eva Ru???sky could possibly be Rudolfsky. * Passengers #149-153 could be Nichel. * Passengers #154-159 surname could be Ribonsky. The N in the surname could also be a W for a surname of Ribowsky. * Passengers #168 thru 171 the Pah?ke family has a black line thru the surname and the ? letter is not readable. * Passengers 177 thru 189 are on the same page and there is a black line that runs down the page through most of the surnames which has made them very hard to read. * Passenger #181 has female written but the fe is crossed out and as the first name is Franz, the sex would be male. * Passenger #189 John Der????hal could possibly be John Derg??thal or the G could be a Z, there is a tail going down thru the line but the top of the letter is covered by a black mark as is the other ? letters in the surname. * Passengers # 193 thru 197 has a big ink mark or a tear in the original manifest and the letters are not readable. Correspondence for Passengers 118 to 123 updated 9/27/00
Ancestors of Beverly Schwartz Sharon and Robert Schwartz WILHELM (WILLIAM) SCHWARTZ Wilhelm emmigrated with his wife and four children from Germany to Bloomington, Illinois in May of 1869. In 1871 the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa where William worked as a cement worker for over 40 years and was considered as one of the pioneers of the city of Des Moines, Iowa. He became a naturalized citizen on March 29, 1886. In addition to the four children that came to America with him, three more sons (Otto, Rudolph, Theodore) and one more daughter (Marie) were born in America. William died on October 23, 1911, at age 81 of pneumonia. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. AUGUSTE (TOEPFER) SCHWARTZ Auguste was pregnant with their fifth child when they made the crossing from Germany. That child (Otto) was born four months later in Bloomington, Illinois. She was a homemaker and like her husband, she was also considered to be one of the pioneers of Des Moines, Iowa. She died February 11, 1911 of pneumonia at age 79. She is buried with her husband in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. JOHANNA (SCHWARTZ) SCHOEN Johanna married Ernest Schoen on February 16, 1879 in Des Moines, Iowa. They had two son (Edward and Herman) and three daughters (Rose, Adaline and Lillian). She became a widow at 46 years old, and never remarried. She died January 25, 1938, at age 80, following a lenghty illiness. Johanna and Ernest are buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. HERMAN SCHWARTZ (for unknown reasons doesn't show on passenger list) Herman married Minnie Schoen on October 26, 1886 and they had twins (Eddie and Josie) plus one daughter (Matilda). Minnie and two children (Eddie and Matilda) died within a 2 year span, leaving Herman with one remaining daughter (Josie). He married Anna Thoma on June 6, 1894 and they had three sons (Willie, Herman and Carl) and three daughters (Clara, Dorothy and Martha). Herman worked with engines at Schmidt & Henry Mfg. for 50 years. He became a naturalized citizen on October 30, 1891. He died June 19, 1938 at age 75. Herman is buried with his 1st wife Minnie in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. His 2nd wife is buried there also, but by herself. GUSTAV SCHWARTZ Gustav married Augusta Graffe on November 25, 1866 in Des Moines, Iowa. They had one son (Fred) and four daughters (Bertha, Mamie, Ruth and Clara). Gustav worked as a meat cutter at John Byrd & son. He was naturalized on October 19, 1892. He died on October 27, 1933 at age 69. Gustav and Augusta are buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. WILHELM SCHWARTZ This is a puzzle...no records for Wilhelm have ever been found and no one knew of this child. EMMA SCHWARTZ Emma married William Priebe in 1885 in Des Moines, Iowa. They had one son George. Emma died in 1892 from complications of childbirth...the baby named Mary, died too. Her husband, William, passed away in 1944. Emma, William and Mary are all buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
