Ship John Fielden
"The 'Ship John Fielden has made an excellent run of ninety days from Liverpool on 11th March 1853, made the Cape of Good Hope in 59 days, off Sydney on 84th day, and took the pilot on board inside Moreton Bay on Saturday last. Berthed on 19 June 1853. In latitude 34 S longitude 23W, spoke the 'Marco Polo' outward bound, which vessel had left Liverpool a day after the 'Ship John Fielde'. Spoke the 'Ariel' from London, for Aloga Bay, in latitude 30 S, longitude 23 W. On the voyage one of the supernumerary seamen of the 'Ship John Fielde' jumped overboard and was drowned. On coming into Moreton Bay CAPTAIN CLARKE was taken rather aback upon finding no buoys to mark the ship channel, as shown upon his chart; for it appears that the buoys recently laid down are now all carried away again. He had no alternative but to hang about the neighbourhood of the spot where he thought the channel ought to be until the pilot came on board, when it was too hazy to proceed, and he was therefore obliged to cast anchor in the open sea channel. The consequence was that the cable parted, and he had to get down another anchor, and breaking his windlass in hoisting the second anchor next morning. The ship was then brought over to the usual anchorage ground, off the Brisbane. The immigrants are all well. Berthed on 19 June 1853. The original number of immigrants embarked was 393 - four deaths and seven births on the passage."

Transcriber's Notes:
The information about the Ship (John Fielden) of 916 tons was published in
the Moreton Bay Courier 18 June 1853. On the film, from which this list
was copied, the year 1853 was crossed out and 1854 put in.
Although the Statement at the beginning of this list states ". . . four
deaths and seven births on the passage", Thomas Guerin, passenger #110 was
the only death indicated, and three births were annotated: passengers #127,
HUNT, Infant male; #199, O'NEIL, Infant; and #229, PURCELL, Infant girl.
Several other Infants were listed as passengers, but none of those indicated
that they were born on board.
To clarify where some of the previous domiciles are located, below is a
list of counties for each country.

Somersetshire, Cambridgeshire, Lancashire (includes Liverpool), Essex,

English and Scottish location names.

Correspondence added October 3, 2005, passengers #55-63, CRANLEY
The name is correctly recorded as Cranley, but the name that James's
wife used later was Margaret.
The ages for both adults are understated, correct ages for both
estimated at 40-42. Margaret was born in Ballyduff, County Waterford,
Ireland and the couple was married in Ballyholey, County Cork, Ireland
in September 1840. Patsy (Patrick) was born on the ship in Moreton Bay.
Another child, Michael, was born in Australia at Coranga, near Dalby,
QLD on 21 August 1856.
James and Margaret lived in Toowoomba where he had a farm. The farm was
near present day Willowburn (Bailey Henderson Hospital). In 1863 and
1864 James was known to be and Alderman/Town Councillor on the
Toowoomba Council. A suburb and street in Toowoomba are named after him.
James died on 3 July 1890 and Margaret died on 26 January 1896. They are
buried with other relatives in the Toowoomba and Drayton Cemetery.
James's obituary lists him as one of the first 200 settlers in Toowoomba.
In June 1892 James's will was contested in the Queensland Supreme Court.
Timothy, Mary (Klein), Margaret (Fahy), John and Patrick are known to have
married and had children.
Notes on the JOHN FIELDEN from Palmer's List of Merchant Vessels:
JOHN FIELDEN (1846)
According to the annual volumes of Lloyd's Register of Shipping for 1851/52-1857/58,
the British ship, JOHN FIELDEN, 916 tons, was built
at New Brunswick in 1846. It is possible that she ws build by James
Briggs, who built both the ship MOUNTAINEER, 869 tons, and the ship
EDINBURGH, 941 tons, in 1840.
Lloyd's Register gives no measurements for the JOHN FIELDEN, although
if she ws indeed built by Briggs, judging from her tonnage she was
approximately 145 feet x 33 feet x22 feet(length x beam x depth of hold).

Correspondence added February 28, 2007, Passengers 111-114, Glasscock
I would like to add my contact details for the ship "John Fielden"
which sailed from England to Moreton Bay, Australia, arriving on
18.6.1854.
On board was a family Glasscock - Charles, Eliza, Emily, & Pharvel
(Paul/Pharraah - later known as Thomas). This family had 2 further
children and during that time made their way to Sydney, where Charles
died in 1865.
Eliza remarried that same year to a German immigrant, Johann Heinrich Broers.
This couple became my GreatGrandparents. They had 4 children, and lived
at Nowra, NSW. Eliza died in 1874 leaving a very young family;
the youngest was my grandfather, who was 3 at the time.
Thankyou,
Kerry Payne (Mrs.)
