Correspondence added December 12, 2005, Passenger 163, SCHUBERTHPassenger #163, listed as Wilhelm Schubeth, is Wilhelm Schuberth. He was born ca 1814 in Guben, northeast of Dresden. He moved to Wandsbek, Holstein, by 1846, when his children were born. He was a carpenter/cabinet-maker. After arriving in the U.S., Wilhelm Schuberth settled in Cincinnati,Ohio, and by 1856 had an apartment at #181 at the corner of 5th and Elm in the city's center. In the fall of 1856, he and Christian F.M. Westphal, a friend from Wandsbek who had arrived in the U.S. in July 1856, decided to pool their money and buy three adjoining farms near Crete, Will Co., Illinois. [Christian Westphal is my great-great-grandfather. Crete is south of Chicago about 30 miles.] The Schuberths moved to Illinois and in with the Westphals in the fall of 1857, but by the spring of 1858, the relationship and farming arrangement had failed. The Schuberths then returned to Cincinnati. After arriving in the U.S., Wilhelm and Christiane Schuberth had four more known children: daughter Martiana, born after 1851 and died summer 1855; twin daughters Emma and Frances, born May 24, 1857 in Cincinnati (Frances died in 1858); and another son, Francis, born 1860 and died spring 1864. Around 1864, Wilhelm Schuberth and his family moved again to Sewickley Township, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. He gave up carpentry to become a farmer. Son Wilhelm (passenger #165), born 1846 in Wandsbek, became a carpenter and builder near Cincinnati. He married Emma Williams and by 1880, had two children, Charles and Margery M. Son Henry C./Heinrich (passenger #166), born June 7, 1848, in Wandsbek, became a tobacco dealer in Miamisburg, Ohio, for the firm Bunzl & Dormitzer of New York City. He married Sarah Oletta Shultz on September 29, 1870. They had three children: Clifford M., Mary, and Shultz. Son August C. (passenger #166), born 1850, made his home in Cincinnati, but by 1920 had moved to Pasadena, California. He and his wife, Margaret, had at least one son, William. Son Charles/Carl (passenger #167), born 1851, settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1880, Charles and his wife, Mary, had a daughter Lucy and a son Albert. I am not related to the Schuberth family. However, the close relationship between them and my own family significantly shaped my family's history. and that is why I have done some research about them. I would be interested in corresponding with any descendants of Wilhelm Schuberth. Ellen Wonderlin Des Moines, Iowa
