Transcriber's Notes:
*The name of this ship is "Hekla" The National Archives and Records
Administration has recorded the ship as the "Nekla" but the correct name is
"Hekla". Actually this is the Hekla II. The first Hekla did not survive a
storm. This second Hekla was then built. Click here for more information and
for a picture of the SS Hekla [http://www.museumnett.no/mka/ssa/thingval.htm].
*Christiansand (Kristiansand), Norway is in the Skagerrak Strait in southern Norway.
Christiania, Norway is now named Oslo. The orginal Oslo was destroyed in a
fire in 1624. The city was rebuilt and renamed Christiania. It resumed the
name Oslo in 1925.
*In the sworn statement the name of the collector of Customs in New York
is unreadable.
Two different people wrote this manifest. The first recorder's handwriting
is highly unique, the second recorder's handwriting is quite poor and hard to
read.
There are two numbering mistakes in this manifest. The first occurs at
number 445. The second occurs at 463. This second may indicate a missing
page or mistake by the original recorders.
The Swedish alphabet is a bit different than English. There are a number
of marks above vowels which alter the pronunciation. The recorders did not
always use these marks and they are not used here. Please refer to a Swedish-
English dictionary for an explanation of these marks, usually seen over a,
o, u. Also W is not usually used in Swedish. It is most often a V.
I have consulted with representatives of the Swedish-American Chamber of
Commerce in Dallas about the spelling of the names and places listed in this
manifest in an attempt to offer more exact information. I wish to thank them
for their cooperation.

All passengers were going to the U.S, no passenger died on this voyage,
all the passengers were intending a protracted sojourn so these columns are
deleted.
On this particular portion of the Hekla manifest in the column headed
"The Country of which they are citizens" all the passengers were from Sweden
except those from Copenhagen, Denmark or Amerika. The original recorders
did not write Sweden in this column, only the town or Parish and county where
these passengers were from. I have deleted the words "Parish" and "County" so
when you see an entry with two names the first is the parish and the second
is the county. As an example, the first entry below. "Harplinge, Halland,
Harplinge is the Parish and Halland is the County.
In the Accomodation column I have used Sngl M or F or Family for Single
Male or Female or Family Compartment.

373* This is probably Qville or Kville Parish.
374* This is Kronoberg County.
376* This is Elzsborg County or Alzsborg with a " over the A. Also for 377,
      378.
382* This middle name is an abbreviation for Christiana. The county is
      Varmland not Warmland.
396* This is Vitsand
401* The middle name is an abbreviation for Caterina.
410* This Varberg not Warberg.
415* This is Skovde.
417* The middle name is an abbreviation for Christina. This is Elzsborg Co.
or Alzsborg. Also for 424 and 454.
418* The middle name is an abbreviation for Augustus.
419* The middle name is an abbreviation for Wilhelm.
426* The first number in the age is unreadable.
436* This is Oster Fadelrick.
437* Gust is probably Gustav.
439* This is Oster Tolllstad.
445* This is a numbering mistake by the original recorder. There are two
      entries numbered 445.
461* There is an ink spot obliterating this word.
463* This might be Stora Markelby.
487* This is a numbering mistake or an omitted page when the list was
      microfilmed by the National Archives.
494* This word does not appear to have a capital letter at the beginning.
495* And 496*and 497* This could be Vastamanlan.
507* The first number in the age is unreadable.I cannot find a town or city
      by this name.
508* This is Sodr Vereloff or Soder Vereloff, meaning South Vereloff.
512* This child is 4 and a half years old.
514* This child is 11 months old.
515* No age given.

National Archives and Records Administration, Film M237, Reel 495, List 597. This manifest was recorded at NARA as Nekla which we believe to be an error on their part.
