Manifest is signed H. Wulf.
Transcriber's Notes:
The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder
or comment by the transcriber.
The use of a ? indicates a word or letter(s) that could not be read, due to quality of
the original document.
Captain's Name: Wolf listed on the coversheet, but Wulf is clearly written in the
sworn statement.
Deputy Collector's name is probably Romanie but may be Romauie.
In the date in the sworn statement, October was written, crossed out and
replaced by December.
*Although the date on the NARA cover indicates December 5, the sworn
statement indicates December 4.
Passenger 2: Germany is written, but crossed out, ditto marks continue until
passenger 12 where United States is written again.
Passenger 6: Umlaut over the second 'u' in Uttermullen. (No umlaut for passenger 7
with the same name.)
Passenger 13: Germany was written and crossed out. Ditto marks continue until
passenger 26.
Passenger 16: Comments/Remarks could be 'glassmaster', but the ending is a double 't',
possibly 'glasscutter'. In the second listing of Hessia, the second
's' and the 'i' are over-written as if the second 's' had been left out.
Appears almost like "Hesica".
Passenger 20: Probably should be Christopher, but writter left out the first 'r'.
Passenger 22: Extra loop above the 'g' appears to indicate an abbreviation.
Passengers 24-32 have a strip of tape over the names so are hard to read.
Passengers 26-31 are from the same family, writer used a leading-s style,
appears like Kafsing.
Passengers 28-31 are heavily taped across the entire row some parts are readable,
see also notes for these passengers below.
Passenger 26: Germany is written, but crossed out, ditto marks continue until the end
of the manifest.
Passenger 27: Middle initial appears to be either 'H' or 'K'.
Passenger 28: First name begins with 'F'. Passenger number has been obliterated.
It appears that the last column is a ditto mark indicating that the 16
year-old is also a male, assumed to be a son of passenger 26.
Passenger 29: This record is the most obliterated, first name is entirely unreadable.
Age might be 47, 44 or 41, Occupation appears to contain the letter 'f'
close to the beginning of the column suggesting wife. Sex is 'f'
although it is hard to read (the paper is torn but letter extends below
the line), passengers 30 and 31 are indicated as daughters with a ditto
mark under sex.
Passenger 30: Very hard to read. First letter may be a 'H' or 'C', second letter
may be either 'a' or 'o', 4th/5th letter may be an 'i'. Name looks vaguely
like Hanna, but it is not at all clear.
Passenger 32: Kassing was originally written as the last name, but this was written
over and is now unreadable, the second letter might be a 'u'. Name has
the general format of 'Hunger' with a descending letter in approximately
the 4th position. First letter of last name may be an 'R'.
Passenger 36: Last name is squeezed into the column and is hard to read, but passengers
37-43 are clear and listed as wife, sons and daughters.
Passenger 38 + 39: Ditto marks would mean sex='f' for these 'sons'.
Passenger 48: is written between the rows for Passengers 47 and 49. Her name appears
to be Anna, but could be Mona or even Nina.
Passenger 50: First name is probably not Anna as he is listed as a male farmer. Middle
initial may also be in question as it matches passenger 48 who was written
in between rows.
Passenger 51: Paper has been damaged at the middle initial, it could be a 'P'.
Passengers 53-58: Klone has an umlaut over the 'o'.
Passenger 64: Appears to be crossed out with a single line.
Passenger 65: Sex column contains both 'f' and 'm'.
Passenger 69: The last three letters are blotchy could be either William or Wilhem.
There does not appear to be a dot for the 'i'.
Passengers 70-71 have been taped over and are hard to read. Manifest was folded
between passengers 71 and 72.
Passenger 70: First letter of occupation could be a 'c'.
Passenger 71: First name appears shorter than "Jacob" below it. First letter may be
an 'L', and name probably contains an 'i' as a dot is visible near the
end of the name. Occupation column is unreadable due to a combination
of torn and taped paper.
Passenger 72: Occupation column is unreadable due to tape. Age is either 20, 22 or 23.
Passenger 73: Magd could be short for Magdeline/Magdelina.
Passenger 79: There is an umlaut over the 'o' in Botner.
Passenger 90: Paper is damaged, possibly 'H. W."
Passenger 91: Copy is dark-First name is short, no letters assend or descend, possibly
Aus or Arn?
Passenger 97: Letter could be 'n' or 'u', making the surname Wiegaud or Weigand.
Passengers 98 and 99 have an umlaut over the u in Steinmuller. (umlaut omitted in
passengers 100-105.)
Passenger 105: Name appears to be Williamina, paper is torn or folded through this name.
Passengers 106-109,258: Correspondence from a descendant noted that the spelling of the last name was JACOBE, but the writer made clear dots over the last letter. JACOBE will be added to the surname list for this ship.
Passenger 107: Occupation column has a large blotch covering this and the next passenger.
It most likely indicates that this passenger is the wife of passenger 106.
Passengers 108-110 are hard to read due to tape.
Passenger 108: See previous note. It apppears that this passenger is the son of
passengers 106 and 107. 'm' in Sex column is quite clear.
Passengers 128-130 are difficult to read due to folds (tape? in the paper).
Passenger 128: There appear to be letters after John ending in 'f' 's' (leading
's' style) or 'p' slightly set appart. All that is readable is the top and
bottom loops of a single letter set apart from John. A small irregularity
in the paper between these two letters makes it hard to tell what other
letter(s) are there. It is possibly a middle initial "J".
Passenger 142: In the first name, the letters 'ica' are superscripted, indicating the
name "Frederica".
Passenger 146: Paper is torn between the first and last name causing damage to
the end of the first name. There is enough space for a superscripted
continuation of the first name. There are no letters on the line following
the 'd' in the first name and before the beginning of the last name.
Passengers 148-149 occur at a fold that has been taped, and are hard to read.
Passenger 148: The fold is worst through the middle of the first name. Exact number
of letters is unclear. Name is probably Carolina, but might be Cristina
or Cristiana. It does not appear to have an descending letter following the
initial 'C', there is an ascending letter in the middle of the name.
Passenger 153: Sex is over-written, m and f.
Passenger 155: daughter is misspelled with an extra 'h'.
Passenger 159: First letter appears to be a 'T', but is probably supposed to be an 'F'.
(See also passenger 161.)
Passenger 160: Possibly 'Louise' spelled phonetically?
Passenger 161: First letter of the last name is written 'F', but for passengers 162-167,
listed as wife, daughters and sons, it is clearly a 'T'. Also, passenger
number is smeared to the right.
Passengers 166 and 167 are listed with the same age.
Passenger 168: In the first name, the letters 'ch' are superscripted indicating the
name Diederich.
Passenger 177: In the first name, the letters 'ch' are superscripted indicating the
name Diederich.
Passenger 179: Name appears to be Sopia, but there may be another letter
(non ascending, non-descending-possibly an 'r') between the 'p' and the 'i'.
Passenger 180: In the first name, the letters 'ch' are superscripted indicating the
name Diederich.
Passenger 185: In the first name, the letters 'ch' are superscripted indicating the
name Diedrich.
Passenger 188: The page has been folded and taped between this and passenger #189,
so it is hard to read.
Passenger 207: Name is on the fold, uses the leading-s script-appears as Ofsarald.
Passengers 208 and 209: Letter in question looks like a 'leading 's' script' but is
not followed by another 's'. Name could be Sachfer or Sachser.
Passenger 213: Frederic's sex has 'm' and 'f' overwritten..
Passenger 214: First letter in question could be 'r' 'v' or 'n'. Srauss, Svauss, Snauss.
Passenger 221: Probably should be Christian, writer appears to have left out the 'r'.
Passenger 223: Occupation might end in 'ier' or 'i?er'.
Passenger 226: Occupation is difficult to read.
Passenger 233: Albert is listed as female.
Passenger 241: The 'd' in Ferd is looped above and to the right, possibly indicating
an abbreviation.
Passenger 244: On the fold and page had white blotches over the name. 'ch' in first
name is superscripted. Last name is either Hebeling or Kebeling.
Passenger 248: Initial letters of first name are unclear (possibly 'D?' or 'G'?-does
not descend) and is merged with the next letter or letters.
Passenger 249: Last name might begin with G, but letter does not descend. The next
two letters may be 'au' or 'an'. Gauker or Ganker.
Passenger 250: Middle letters are overwritten, May be two letters or three, possibly
'Schulz' or 'Schantz'.
Passenger 252: In the first name, the 'c' is superscripted.
Passenger 253: Unclear markings follow the first name, may indicate an abbreviation
of Johnathan.
Passenger 254: A mark follows the first name, but it is unclear if it is a smudge or
an abbreviation.
Passenger 255: Last name looks like 'Fauaner' but could be 'Fananer'.
Passenger 257: First name looks like M?achin or M?aclin. The question mark here
indicates another letter or a flourish on the leading 'M'. Last name is
either Hellmich, Heillmich or Hillmich.
Passenger 258: Daughter of Passengers 106 and 107. Last name on manifest is clearly JACOBI, but
descendant of the family indicates it is JACOBE. Descendant information also indicates
correct spelling of first name is Sophie rather than Sopie as written in the manifest.
Passenger 259: No first name indicated.
At the end of the manifest are two sets of numbers, one set, in the birthplace column
has two numbers with unreadable tags, 10 and 11, the other set in the "United States"
column is an apparent subtraction of 259-21=238.

The name is POSTEHER, but the clerk dropped the second 'e'. Within five
years of their arrival, they americanized their given names and changed
the surname to POSTIER which is still in use by the descendents today. I
understand the pronunciation is the same for Postier or Posteher.
The family is from the village of Gräfinghagen, Bielefeld, Westphalia,
Prussia. The wife, Hanne was born in Asemissen, Lippe.
William and Hannah had an older child, August Heinrich Posteher who left
Prussia 'secretely' about 6 months earlier on the Bark Francisca (see
Vol. 3). They settled in Kalmar Twp, Olmsted Co, Minnesota. Their last
known child William Henry was born in Minnesota.
I have found some information on the Bark Coriolan and her trip (from
The Ships List and from family journals): The Coriolan was sailing boat
(Bark) built at Kennebunk, Main in 1850. She was 162 length x 33 beam x
22 depth of hold. The Coriolan was owned from at least 1865 by the
Bremen firm of F Reck & Co. The Posteher family’s contract for sailing
was drawn on 10 Sep 1852 with Captain H Wulf. The Coriolan left Bremen
13 Oct. They encountered a bad storm and were blown off course, having
to return to Bremen. They lost 7 days due to this storm. After 54 days
on the water, they arrived in America at New York on the 4th of December
1852. Christine Lippert Fong found a German newspaper with a notice of
the trip - it reads "a rather good trip, Meals and treatment was good."

Correspondence 4/10/01 passengers 106-109 and 258 Jacobe
I just wanted to thank you for transcribing the passenger list of the
Coriolan. The information on passengers 106-109 and 258 matches my
wife's family history perfectly. Jacob Jacobe (not Jacobi) and his wife
(Julia Ann or Juliana nee Seemons or Siemens) came from Germany in 1852
and settled south of Syracuse in Fabius, New York. Your transcription
confirms this information.
Jacob and Julia had ten children total, five of which survived to the
turn of the century and beyond. Only Elizabeth survived and was on board
the Coriolan; William H. and Sophie died, and family tradition suggests
Sophie died on board. Your transcription does not confirm that death,
but shows she was born on board. Enlisting on October 29, 1861, Jacob
served in both the 61st and 185th New York infantry regiments during the
civil war. He was promoted to Corporal and was wounded in the Battle of
Lewis Farm near Petersburg on March 29, 1865, in a charge led by
Brigadier General Joshua Chamberlain of Little Round Top fame. Jacob was
hospitalized in Lincoln Hospital in Washington, D.C. when President
Lincoln was shot only a few blocks away. Jacob's civil war pension
records note that he and Julia were married on March 1, 1846, by Rev.
Potter Hensler in Belsheim, Germany. Courtney Tucker
