Transcriber's Notes:
* Date and port of arrival are not shown on any of the 12 pages of
manifest submitted to this transcriber. However on the cover page the
following information is present: in handwriting similar to that on page 1
of the manifest is written: Clotilda (note the last letter is definitely
an "a", not an "e" as shown on page 1 of the Manifest; under the ship's name
in the same script is written: Nov 5-this is crossed out and under it
is written "4" with a circle encompassing the 4; following these numbers
is a slash and the number 5 is written. From this I assume that the ship
left Antwerp on Nov. 5, 1851. Beneath the above is written with heavy felt
marker and lined out is "AB 4599" and under this is written AB 9015.
Under this is a stamped number: 1612. The ship docked in New York, NY.
* A "?" is used to indicate that the handwritting prevents a definite
transcription of the person's name.
* An "*" is used when there's an obvious error noted.
* Two peculiar features in this manifest are: (1) instead of using the letter
"f" to denote females the scribe used a long curved line with flourishes
at each end going in opposite directions; and (2) the figure "6" is never
seen and what has been taken as such by this transcriber is a figure that
most closely look like the greek small letter sigma.
Passenger Notes:
1 this passanger was probably male yet under the sex column the
letter "f" is written, probably as this was the first person
on this page.
6, 78, 91, 116, 141 The letters "Chr" are perfectly clear. What it
may stand for is not certain, but it could be short for Charles.
There are many other passengers who's first names are shortened
with the superscript "a" or "h". or "t" such as:
#38, 53, 146, 177, 182, 188, 189 Cath^a - note I have used an upside
down carat since I can not make a supercript - so this and often
just Cath = probably Catharina.
109 118, 123, 151, 178, 183 - Eliz^h where the final "h" is not a
superscript and at times with no final "h" = Elizabeth.
111 Chr?'? can't decipher letter after the "h" nor the superscript.
and as with Chr listings could be short for Charles.
142 Barb^a = Barbara
212 232 Chris^n = Christian
8 First name has only 2 letters - the second letter is
definitely "s" but the First letter is questionable -
might be a "T" or a "Y"
69 through 77 The "u" in the surname Mautz might well be
an "n" making the surname Mantz.
70 and 71 Two females having the same name but with different
ages in the same family was seen a few other times on this
manifest, and may have been a usual custom in Germany at this time.
78 to 85 Surname is very uncertain - could be Burk,
or Buck but that doesn't seem Germanic.
86 Surname is questionable - could be Neff.
89 Given name maybe Ch for Charles.
91 Might be Wenzel-see Passenger 121.
93 to 99 The surname Neible may be Weible.
100 St - might stand for Stanley, or Stanislaw.
100 Surname of Puka is strange and could be different.
114 Surname of Puka is strange and could be different.
116 The surname could be Kunz.
117 to 119 Maybe Hadeile
139 There could be 2 or 3 letters after the first letter E
could be Eui, Eiu, Eue, etc.
149 The first number in the age column is not complete -
most likely a 2.
158 and 160 Surnames, Ohlen and Oehlen, are very similar.
161 Can not make out the first 2 letters of the surname -
could be Wo or Mo.
192 Letters seem clear even though name is strange.
Correspondence 02/06/02 passenger #195 BINZ
Received the passenger list of the ship Clotilde which sailed from
Antwerp to New York 4 November, 1851 from a distant relative in Tennessee
who is really into the Genealogy hobby. Franz Binz is my great, great
grandfather who settled east of Green Bay, Wisconsin in the Town of
Humboldt. The name was "Americanized" to Bins. He was given the same
name as his father, and passed the name down once again to his son, my
great grandfather. My grandfather named one of my Uncles "Frank Michael
Bins", so the name indeed made the rounds. My ancestors were dairy farmers
on the same homestead up until my grandfather Ed Bins auctioned off the
farm in the mid 1960's when none of the 4 sons expressed an interest in
farming. He sold the farm to investors headed up by my father. A
planned freeway ended up going west of this land and the property was
turned instead into a small, private airport instead. The road into
the airport is stilled named Bins Lane. There are no more farmers in
the Bins family, all descendants have gone on to other professions and
pursuits. Most Bins relatives still live in Wisconsin. The Bins family
was very prolific over the years and most of my ancestors married into
other German families as well as some Belgian families who make up the
vast majority of the population in this area. One small note, my
great-great Grandfather was from a little town in Germany named Bruttig.
My great-great Grandfather Kolb on my mother's side was from the SAME
small town. Both emigrated to the U.S., and somehow their kids, my
parents, ended up getting married, although they grew up 100 miles away
from one another. A very small world indeed.... Thanks, this was
enlightening. Dan Bins
