Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional inforamtion in the transcriber notes.
Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. These numbers are
included in the identification of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1894 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case O'Leary for passengers 2-33 and Grant for all others).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably
allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should have
a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
The Ticket column was added by the original completer. The No of certificate column
apparently has not the number but the date of each passenger's certificate.
Occupation is Grocer for all male passengers except as noted below. Occupation is universally
recorded as Merchant or Grocer because following the Chinese Exclusion Act of May 6, 1882
admission was denied to all Chinese except laborers already in the US and "students, teachers,
and merchants or those proceeding to the United States from curiosity."
Last Place of Residence is listed as China at the top of the page, presumably with ditto marks
for passengers below. Both "China" and any ditto marks are obscured by the stamp. There is
no Last Residence for passengers not bound for San Francisco.
Destination was added by the original completer but the entries are obscured by the "Affdt
Merchant" stamp.
There is a La Libertad on the coast of Ecuador and El Salvador and in the interior
of Nicaragua.
7,8 are Male. Occupation is "with father No 11."
13 is Female. Occupation is "with her husband # 2?."
14 Destination is Oakland, Cal.
16 Occupation is "to join her husband."
17 Occupation is "with her mother #28."
18 Occupation is "to join her husband."
21 Destination is Sacramento, Cal
22 Destination is obscured but could be ditto which would make it Sacramento.
26 Destination could be City ????
37,39 Occupation is Merchant.
39 has a note "2 scars over right eye, ? left center of forehead."
40 Occupation is "with her husband."
41-45 Occupation is "with parents."
47-56 Departed per SPRR May 14, 1894. This is probably Southern Pacific RR.
61 Occupation is "with his brother # 25. He departed per San Blas May 18, 1894.
66 departed per San Blas May 18, 1894.
