Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional inforamtion in the transcriber notes.
? Question marks replace illegible information or letters.
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be difficult.
However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests. In this portion of
the film the numbers are not in exact order. These numbers are included in the
identification of the film and reel numbers below.
For passengers bound for San Francisco, passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp
that varies depending on the disposition of the passenger. For some passengers the stamp
covers the Last Residence entry making it difficult or impossible to read.
Passengers allowed to land have the following stamp:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1894 by Insp's (blank
for a name, in this case Grant).
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Refused Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were probably
allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country. The National Archives should have
a file for these passengers describing what happened to them.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
For passengers bound for a further port there are two possible dispositions:
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number
Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date)
The following columns had no entries and are not included in the table:
Height
Complexion
Color of Eyes
Physical Marks or Peculiarities and Facts of Identification
Occupation is Merchant for all passengers bound for San Francisco except as noted below. For
passengers in transit to other ports it is Gorcer, except as noted below. Occupation is
universally recorded as Merchant or Grocer because following the Chinese Exclusion Act of
May 6, 1882 admission was denied to all Chinese except laborers already in the US and
"students, teachers, merchants or those proceeding to the United States from curiosity."
Last Place of Residence is completed only for San Francisco bound passengers.
Many of the dates of landing are illegible due to ink that appears to have run.
Salina Cruz is on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Callao is the port city for Lima, Peru.
20 Occupation is "wife."
21 Name could be Hoi or just Ho. There is a note under the stamp that is only partly legible:
"a small faint mole on his left ear lips -------------"
25 Occupation is "son."
59 Occupation is "wife."
60 Occupation is "wife."
61 Occupation is "wife."
68 Occupation is "wife."
74 Occupation is "wife."
75 Occupation is "girl."
76 Occupation is "wife."
79 Occupation is "with his brother."
80 Occupation is "with his brother."
79-81 went by the ship Colima June 18, 1894
112 Name could be Suet Fie.
151 Occupation is "with his uncle."
152 Occupation is "with father."
89-90, 93-149, 151-166, 168-169 are described as "Departed per SPRR June 9, 1894."
This is probably the Southern Pacific Railroad.
