The Captain’s name was Lean.
There are two journals of this journey in existence. Both are in the State Library of New South Wales in whose copyright they remain. (Ref Mitchell Library MSS.3348 Item No 1) Diary of A Voyage to Australia kept by CH Lines on board the Good Ship Ballarat and Maria Ryder’s Journal (she is Miss Ryder of the passenger list,) which is also in the Liverpool Archives in England.
Details of the Ballarat are in Ian Nicholson’s "Log of Logs". S he was built at Aberdeen Scotland by Alexander Duthie & Co. Dimensions: 141.9ft x 27.4ft x 20ft: 637 tons o.m and 713 tons n.m. She was owned by Duncan Dunbar. On her maiden voyage in 1852 she took 78 days from the Lizard to Melbourne, and on the succeeding voyage was 79 days for the identical journey.
