Transcriber's Notes:
*Most likely the captain is George Siddons Murray as he was the captain on other
voyages of this vessel.
*Sworn statement of captain has been taken from another ship sailing the same
year and changed to fit SS Alaska. Original manifest statement was too dark
to read; name of collector of customs could not be read.
*Intended destination of all passengers is United States therefore that column
has been eliminated.
*No deaths occurred therefore that column has been eliminated.
*Accomodation of all passengers is Second Cabin therefore that column has been
eliminated.
*Baggage is listed once for families which accounts for blank spaces in some
columns; baggage is listed next to the passenger as it is on the manifest.
*All passengers are listed as protracted sojourn therefor that column has been
eliminated.
*924 Sunrl, this is written on the manifest as Sunr. with the l written above the
line; this is an abbreviation of a given name.
*936 The middle initial is I or J.
*941 Elizle, on the manifest the l and e are written above the line; this is
an abbreviation of the given name.
*944 Occupation is written on manifest as Carp. with the r written above the
line and is an abbreviation of Carpenter.
*946 Occupation is written on manifest as Carp. with the r written above the
line and is an abbreviation of Carpenter.
*947 Sex Male; Wife is listed as occupation on the manifest.
*948 Lab is probably abbreviation of Laborer or Labourer.
*951 Given name appears to be Isare; could also be Isarr, Jsare or Jsarr;
occupation is probably Bricklayer.
*953 Rd is written on the manifest with the d above the line and has a period
under the d; it is an abbreviation of a given name.
*959 After the surname, Ki?es is written and the hand writing is different
from the surname.
*963 Occupation is abbreviation for laborer or labourer.
*966 Elizle, the le on the manifest is written above the line and is an
abbreviation of a given name.
*971 Elizth, the th on the manifest is written above the line and is an
abbreviation of a given name.
*976 Middle initial is I or J.
*978 First letter is F or T.
*981 Occupation is abbreviation for Engineer.

*1006 Occupation is abbreviation for carpenter.
*1013 Occupation ?hal first letter could be a G or P; M? the second letter
could be a k or h.
*1018 Edud, the second d is written above the line and is most likely abbreviation
for Edward.
Correspondence 7/4/00 Passenger 1010
Many thanks to you and your colleagues for your work in
transcribing the immigrant ships' manifests. I was delighted to find my
great grandparents, Simeon and Emily Stodgell listed on page 10 of the
SS Alaska arriving NY, NY 5/2/1887 from Liverpool, England and
Queenstown, Ireland. On the page you transcribed there is listed as
passenger 1010 a Mary Stodgell, Spinster, age 25 - I believe this is
the sister of my grandfather, John. John was born is 1964 so it would
apprear reasonable that Mary was born in 1862. I believe she was called
Polly. I am anxious to see, when page 7 is transcribed, if my grandfather
and his other sibling are listed: they would be Charles, John, Juliana,
and Frank. Janet Stodgell Porges
