Total number of passengers 1112
viz 58 Cabin 152 2nd Cabin and 902 Steerage

(Signed) Osw. l. Munney, Master

Transcriber's Notes:

* Most likely the captain is George Siddons Murray as he was the captain on other
  voyages of this vessel.
* There was no Sworn Statement with this manifest. The above Sworn statement
was taken from another ship of this route and time period. The Captain's
name was from his signature at the end of the passenger list.
** I have eliminated this column as all passengers were listed as the United
   States in this column.
*** The original recorder used a bracket when listing the total number of
pieces of baggage for each family. I have listed the stated number with
the last member of a family.
There were no deaths listed on these pages of the manifest.

1025 - schoolmaster was written as school with master written beneath it;
most likely to fit in the narrow column
1041,1042 - Carpr.-the r was a superscript with a period beneath it; most
       likely an abbreviation for carpenter
1043 - Railroad Man was written as Railroad with Man written beneath it;
most likely to fit in the narrow column
1050 - Mathw.-the w was a superscript with a period beneath it; most likely
       an abbreviation for Mathew
1054 - The columns for country to which they intend to inhabit, accomodation,
number of pieces of baggage and purpose of travel were blank; this
passenger was the last one in the 2nd Cabin section
1063 - The top of the page this passenger was on damaged and the middle
initial (possily I) and age were not readable
1063,1064,1065,1093,1094 - most likely abbreviations for transient
1081 - there was no period after Geo and the o of Geo was connected to the
O of Orgill; it is most likely Geo. Orgill
1086,1087 - There was a bracket for the baggage column for these two
passengers but there was only a dash (-) in the column instead of a
       number
1109 - there was an ink spot or hole in the column for country of citizenship
       and was not readable
1110,1111 - there were ditto marks in this column meaning the country of
citizenship was the same as passenger 1109 which was not readable

Correspondence 7/4/00 Passengers 1035, 1036

I was so pleased to find my great-grandparents among those listed for
the S.S. Alaska, arriving NY, NY on May 2, 1887 from Liverpool, England
and Queenstown, Ireland. My great-grandparents are listed as passengers
1035 and 1036, my great-grandfather's name was Simeon Stodgell and
he and his wife were from Fivehead, Somerset, England. (It was probably
written as Simon or Simen). I believe that it is Simeon and Emily's daughter,
Mary, who is listed on page 9 and was known as Polly. Emily and Simeon
Stodgell lived into their 80s and settled in Windsor, Ontario, Canada where
they are buried with other members of our family. Their sons Charles, John
(my grandfather) and Frank as well as another daughter, Emily, should be
listed on the Manifest - perhaps on page 7 which is still being transcribed.
Interestingly enough, John and his wife named their firstborn after Simeon,
namely, Simeon John Stodgell who was my uncle and a founder of the stock
brokerage firm which became Walwyn, Stodgell, & Co. in Canada. This
younger Simeon lived to be 103 1/2 and died only two years ago.
