Elizth = Elizabeth
Geo = George
Jas = James
Jno = Jonathan
Magt or Margt = Margaret
Richd = Richard
Robt = Robert

On the manifest the ship's name is written Affghan
other records (such as the book "Famine Immigrants") use
the spelling Afghan. It's probably Affghan, but if you
do more research on the ship it may be useful to search
under both spellings.
2 William Black is my great-great-great grandfather. He and
his family settled in Allegheny County, PA. William is credited with
founding the city of Greenock PA (he suggested naming it after the
Scottish shipbuilding center near Glasgow). He died in 1857.
3 Isabella Neilson Black; according to
Thomas Cushing's History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, her
brother was the Scots engineer James Beaumont Neilson.
4 Mary Black (her name was spelled Marey in her christening records)
married Robert Wilson. They are mentioned in Thomas Cushing's
History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
5 Thomas Neilson (or Nelson) Black. His middle name is spelled Neilson
in his christening record, Nelson in his father's will.
6 Ann Black married Charles Wesley Cowan in 1848. They are listed
in the 1850 PA census as living next door to her parents, William and
Isabella Black. They moved to Perry Cty, OH, in the 1870s. After his
death in 1882, she married George Raine and moved to his farm in
Wabaunsee Cty, KS.
7 Janet Black (spelled Jeanet in her christening records and
Jeannette on her tombstone) married William Owens. She is buried in
Greenock [PA] Cemetery.
8 Francis is probably the correct spelling (not Frances). Ann and
Charles Cowan had a daughter whose name was also spelled Francis.
9 According to her father's estate file, Jane married Benjamin Bolton.
10 This Isabella Black was William and Isabella's granddaughter. Their
three oldest sons are not listed on the manifest; we don't know which
was Isabella's father. Presumably she came to the U.S. with her
grandparents because her parents were dead. According to her father's
estate records, she married Theodore Shannon.
30 The name Dvd is most likely an abbreviation for David. The second
letter may, however, be an o (written carelessly, with the top open).
33 The first name may be an abbreviation for Alexander.
The last letter is a superscript, and could be an R.
63 The surname may also be Rutston.
73 The beginning of the surname is just a curve with a blotch at the
bottom; though vaguely like a capital C, it doesn't resemble any of
the other capital letters in the manifest. It possibly should be an O,
making the surname Orr; the last two letters do look distinctly like
lower-case R's.
80 Probably Mat (more often written Matt) is short for Mathew (or
Matthew).
81 The paper is very dark at this line and so the given name is hard to
see. It may be James or Dennis. The surname is clearer, but the ending
is obscured just enough to that it's not absolutely certain the last two
letters are er.
82, 83 The surname may also be Caition; as written, however, the i
following the t definitely is dotted (as are most of the i's on the
manifest), but the letter preceding the t (r/i?) is not.
84 This may be the manifest writer's misspelling of Dougal McDougal.
86, 87 On line 86, the passenger's name is spelled out. The following
line has unmistakable ditto marks for both names, and the age written
out. Also, the surname may be the manifest writer's misspelling of
McDougal.
88 The surname may be the manifest writer's misspelling of McDougal.
89 The given name may be an abbreviation for Alexander; the final r
seems to be superscript. Also, the surname may be the manifest writer's
misspelling of McDougal.
90 The surname may be the manifest writer's misspelling of McDougal.
107, 108 Surname may also be Robertson.
110 Given name may be an abbreviation for Alexander.
119, 120 Surname may be a misspelling of McBride.
137 Given name may be an abbreviation for Alexander.
139 Given name is either Jas (for James) or Jud.
