Transcriber's Notes:
* * An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder,
not the transcriber.
In other cases it indicates that a diacritical mark is on a word, which
will be indicated below according to the passenger number.
The ? indicates letters or words that cannot be read due to the
quality of the original document, and will also be elaborated upon
below according to the passenger number.
* **On each page of the manifest, the column "The country to which they
severally belong" has the following handwritten note, above and below
the printed notation: "Last legal residence and country of residence."
The column "died on board" has been omitted, since apparently no one
died, but for passenger no.1, there is a notation in that column that
reads "not on board". Since all passengers except the last four
(nos.315-318,who had the notation 1.classe in that column) were
traveling in steerage,I have omitted that column also. Under the column
"The country in which they intend to become inhabitants", in all
cases it was the U.S., but also included a city or location within
the U.S. I transcribed the city and/or location, but not "U.S.". The
original list was not numbered. I added the numbers myself,in accordance
with ISTG guidelines. In the notes below, the numbers correspond to the
number of those entries which contain question marks.
* ***The word "Philadelphia" has a line drawn through it. The column
"died on the voyage" has the notation "not on board" for this passenger.
* ****Following "Hettenfaffen" is both the clearly written word "America",
and a ditto mark, indicating that the country is Germany, as is the
one that preceeds it. It is strange; America was not crossed out, but
neither were the ditto marks, which are also written very clearly, just
above the word America.
* *****The total of 313 in the steerage section apparently did not include
the first passenger, who was "not on board", hence the discrepancy
between the recorder's's total of 317 and my total of 318.
* Passenger No. 2: The third letter of the surname may be an "r": Ulrich.
* Passenger Nos.3-6: The three missing letters in the town name are
illegible, but do not extend above or below the line.
* Passenger No. 8: The surname is very faint, but could well be Thiem.
* Passenger No. 10: The three missing letters in the town name are
illegible, but do not extend above or below the line.
* Passengers No. 11-15: The first letter of the surname could be either
L or Z: van Zele or van Lele. The first letter of the town name could
be B or P; second letter illegible, but does not extend above or below
the line.
* Passenger No. 16: Place name could be Stale, or Hale.
* Passengers No. 18-26: There is an umlaut over the "u" in Grunwald. The
4th letter of the town name could be e or s; the 6th may be h.
* Passenger No. 27: The surname is either Kemen or Tiemen.
* Passenger No. 28 The second letter of the surname could be an a; the
fifth letter could be an e; the next two letters are unreadable, but
seem to have an umlaut over one of them; the last two letters could be
l and y, but the downstroke of the y, if it is one, runs into what may
be an upstroke of a K in the line below. Possibilities are Batte??ly
or Batter?ly.
First two letters of town name could be Or, or Pe.
* Passenger No.29: Surname could be Kaiser or Kasser. For town name, see
* Passenge No. 28.
* Passengers No. 33: For town name, see Passenger No. 28
* Passengers No. 34-36: Town name very unclear, could possibly be
Hotislakispirette!
* Passenger No. 37: Town name could be Tannstein or Fannstein.
* Passenger No. 45: Surname could be Bixler, Bikler, or Bihler. First
two letters of town name could be T (with umlaut over the u) or Ta
* Passenger No. 46-50: Surname could be Knucosi or Jinucosi
* Passenger No. 51: Occupation may be Gartner or Gastneu.
* Passenger No. 52: First letter of place name could be R or B; three
or four letters following, before what appears to be ch at the end,
do not extend above or below the line.
* Passenger No. 53: Second letter of place name could be o or c.
* Passengers No. 55-56: Third and fourth letters of town name illegible.
* Passenger No. 58: Name of town in Louis (Louisiana?)not legible, but
last two letters could be ta or ha.
* Passenger No. 60: Last three letters of place name could be eal, eab
