Correspondence - 1/00
#52-56 "The GRIEPENSTROH Family in Massac County" My ggg-grandfather Johann Frederich
Wilhelm (Frederick) Griepenstroh was born on 18 October 1802 to parents Johann Christopher
Griepenstroh (1754-1829) and Catherine Margarethe Moring (1756-1832) in Rahden, Kingdom of
Hannover, Germany. At the time, Rahden was a small village of flax farmers in Northern
Germany about 40 miles west of the city of Hannover. Frederick Griepenstroh married
Marie Hedewig Benecker on 24 January 1824 in Essern, Germany. In 1846, Frederick made
the most important decision of his life-his family would emigrate to America. Poor
economic conditions, no family farm, and letters from America telling of a life of
“milk and honey” were probably the majors factors in the decision. German tradition/law
provides for the youngest son in the family to receive the farm. Thus, Frederick surely
had a younger brother who took over the farm in 1832 after their parents had passed away.
Frederick and Marie probably had older children who decided to stay in Germany.
Three children did make the voyage with their parents.

Frederick’s daughter Catherina and her husband Kurt Henry Shelton had immigrated to
America a few years earlier and had already settled in Massac County, Illinois.
Kurt Henry Shelton (1817-1875) and his wife Catherine Griepenstroh came to Massac County
at the end of 1845. Most likely they sent word to Frederick Griepenstroh in Germany that
life was much better in this country. Kurt Henry Shelton brought to this country the
first steam threshing machine from Germany. He farmed and raised his large family of
ten chilren in Metropolis. Later in his life he became a steamboat captain.
On February 7, 1875, he died on the steamer Pat Clebourne. His wife Catherine Griepenstroh
Shelton died September 1, 1878 in Metropolis. Both are buried in the Oddfellow Cemetery
in Metropolis.

During the 1800's, the two major ports in Germany were Hamburg and Bremen. The Griepenstrohs
sailed from the latter. Bremen is about 100 miles north of their former home. The family
set sail from Bremen on the Bark Sultan, captained by William L. Phinney, on or about
August 16, 1846. Of the 142 passengers aboard, 12 died during the voyage and were
buried at sea. Frederick's wife and five year old daughter Wilhelmina were among those
who perished during the eight week voyage. They both died of cholera. The 44 year old
Frederick, his 10 year old son Louis, and 8 year old daughter Caroline arrived in
New Orleans on October 24, 1846. The family had left Germany so full of hope and with
the promise of a new start in a wonderful land. Instead, they began their lives in
America with overwhelming sadness and two less voices. The recent widower and his two
young children probably stayed in New Orleans only a few days to a few weeks. They took
a steamboat up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Cincinnati, Ohio. After a short stay
in Cincinnati, they made their way down the Ohio River and settled in Massac County in
late 1846 or early 1847. Bart Gripenstraw [bart_gripenstraw@yahoo.com]

Correspondence 3/00
#24 though the name is spelled something like Merchbacher on the original manifest,
this is most likely Georg Merzbacher, who came from near Lamburg, not Hamburg,
which is on the original manifest. He was from Battelsdorf bei Lamburg
(Battelsdorf near Lamburg) and settled in Marshall, Texas, where he went into
business making wagons. In 1852 he married Katherine Muntz, also from Bavaria,
Germany, and they raised a family of eleven children. Georg was the brother of
my great-grandfather, Frederick Merzbacher, who arrived on the Bark Edmund in 1852,
also at New Orleans, with his bride-to-be, Barbara Schmidt and her brother,
Georg Schmidt. They established residence in Jefferson, Texas, about twenty miles
north of Marshall, Texas. Frederick Merzbacher was a grocery merchant and carried
a lot of imported foods obtained through suppliers in New Orleans, LA.
