I, Capt. N.C. Franzen, Master of the SS Suevia do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board of the said SS Suevia at Hamburg from which port said Hamburg has now arrived and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and also the occupation of each of the passengers, the location of the compartment or space of the said vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each, and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage and the dates and the names and ages of those who died; also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. Correspondence added 12 April 2000:
While I am not related to the Hillmer family, I am working on an article
on emigrants from my home town Tating, and this is how I came across
that family.
Before emigrating to America, Christian Hilmer (date of birth 22 April 1835)
was a shepherd in Tating, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
He was married to Maria Auguste (nee Kaup or Raup?), who was born
on 9 April, 1837 in Oldenswort. They had 6 sons:
1. Heinrich Christian Johann Hilmer, born 3 January 1862 in Tating
2. Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Hilmer, born 4 May 1864 in Tating
3. Johann Rudolf Hilmer, bore 21 September 1866 in Tating
4. Hermann Friedrich Hilmer, born 9 January 1869 in Tating
5. Martin August Hilmer, born 25 April 1871 in Tating
6. Wilhelm Friedrich Hilmer, born 21 March 1876 in Tating
In his application for permission to emigrate he stated that three of
his siblings were already in the U.S.
The permission was granted on 7 May 1883.
