Correspondence 3/23/01 passenger #368 Mahnsen
I've found no ancestor on the page, but a likely remote relative.
My mother's birth-name is Mahnsen, and I know, that in Germany it is
a very rare name (less than 10 in the telefone-book of Germany). The
first known ancestor of the Mahnsens from my family was a carpenter
who arrived, I suppose, 1800 in Wesselburen/Nordern Germany from
Danemark (or formerly danish, today german Distrikts). I suppose,
Heinrich Mahnsen on the list is also an relative of that man.

Anna Johanne Hermine Dorfel is my great grandmother. She was born,
January 14, 1862 in Freyburg in Sohles Germany but today the area is
in Wroclaw, Poland. Her parents were Herman Dorfel/Doerffel and
Anna Tischlerweis. Anna Dorfel settled in Chicago, Illinois and
married Ernst Heinrich Friedrich Golling on October 24, 1884. They
had 3 children, Arthur Joseph, Helen & Alma Goelling. Anna Dorfel
died on December 8, 1940 and is buried with Ernst Goelling at
Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. My grandfather,
Arthur Goelling moved to Washington, DC/Maryland where his line
of the family now resides. Contact: Mary
Correspondence 02/06/2003 passenger #74 Schmidt
I have located my Gr.-Grandfather, Carl Frederick Schmidt, as passenger # 74
on the S.S. Silesia, Hamburg to New York City, arriving July 18, 1881, then at
age 31. He married Fredericka Wilhelmina Karstedt in October of 1881, 3 short
months after arriving in this country. They had 3 sons and 4 daughters.
He settled in Freeport, Illinois where he worked for the Illinois Central R.R.
Carl retired in 1925 and passed away age the age of 88.
We have not yet located the ship that brought Fredericka to the U.S. but since
she does not appear to have arrived with Carl, we now theorize that she was here
earlier and perhaps corresponded with him before he left Germany.
I will share information with anyone that is a descendant of Karl & Fredericka
and/or a descendant of any of their siblings, cousins, etc, that may be unknown
to me. Write me at Tom Monigold
