Transcriber's notes:
? represents letters or words that could not be read accurately.
The captain's surname, Hesfe, could be the old style of writing
the name Hesse. The person recording the names was not consistent
in his manner of writing the double s. Sometimes it was written
as ss and sometimes as sf or fs.
There were no deaths on this voyage. I have eliminated the Death
column to save space.
All passengers occupied the Steerage part of the vessel.
There were no Cabin passengers so I have eliminated this column.
Some of the cities the passengers intended to inhabit are not
common to all researchers so I'm posting the U.S. states these
cities are listed in at the present time:
Red Wing - Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota
Red Oak - Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana,
Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, Pennsylvania
Dwight - Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts,
Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia
The following notes are listed by passenger number:
706 and 707 Rodo?a - The letter in question doesn't fall below
the line or extend high above the line.
708 through 710 Ba?el - The letter in question doesn't fall
below the line or extend high above the line.
725 Christ. Gen?i?gen - There is a ink smudge across parts
of the letters. The first letter in question extends high
above the line and could be K or T. The second letter in
question doesn't fall below the line or extend high above
the line.
726 and 727 Theodor Gutekunst and Johann Gust. Buhler - There
is a name written in very tiny letters just below the first
name of passenger 726. The name appears to be Heinrich but
I can't be positive. I'm not sure if this added name refers
to passenger 726 or 727.
729 Heinrich ?asch - The name is either Basch or Rasch.
771 Moi?ia Hopfe - The letter in question doesn't fall below the
line or extend high above the line.
777 Josefa ??ail - There is an ink splotch on the two letters,
making it impossible to accurately decipher.
796 Anna Andersdotter - Her age is either 27 or 29.
826 Jacobi? Mydland - The letter in question doesn't fall below
or extend high above the line.
835 through 837 Arn??ig - The name is either Arnevig or Arnwig.
844 Fri?jof Backelin - The name is either Fribjof or Fritjof.
856 Hanna O?sdotter - The letter in question is either H, L,
or T.
866 Johannes Andersfon - The surname may be writtin in the old
style of writing the double S, representing Andersson as we
know it today.
882 Sal?e Olsen - The name is either Salre or Salve.
Correspondence 8/16/01 passenger #769 Brambring
I have finally found my great-great grandfather among your transcribed
pages!! His name is Franz Brambring (actually Franz Brambrink) from
Dülmen, Germany. He came over on the SS Salier on 15 May 1880
(passenger # 759). He settled in Duelm, Benton County, Minnesota.
He married Margarethe Woken, and had 6 children in America. I am in
contact with our German relatives now, and can share family information
back to 1642. Please contact me if you are researching this family.
