Transcriber's Notes:
GENERAL
1 The manifest had no captain's name, no sworn statement, and no columns headings.
2 Most names of countries are spelled as in English, with the exception of Bulgarie (Bulgaria), Armenia (Armenie), Syria (Syrie), and Rumania (Roumanie).
3 The ship embarked from Rotterdam (Oct. 19, 1899), stopping at Boulogne (Oct. 20, 1899) to pick up some passengers and arriving at Quarentaine (presumbaly quarantine) on Oct. 29, 1899 (the date Ô29Õ is written like it was added later).
4 For steerage passengers, letters probably represent the section and numbers the berth.
5 Boulogne*: after the name Boulogne are letters that appear something like "s/m," with the "s" above the line.
6 In the headings "Steerage from Boulogne," Boulogne is consistently written "Boulognesh."

Correspondence 3/25/00 Barbara or go to family tree site at Melmed
F. Melamed, passenger #368 may be my great-grandmother Freida Melamed.
Freida Melamed's son, Israel Melamed is listed on the SS Lahn
Both Freida Melmed, my great-grandmother, and Nathan Melmed, my grandfather,
Freida's son, came to America from Panevezys, Lithuania. They settled in
South Philadelphia, PA. Nathan was a carpenter, peddler and insurance
salesman. He was also a song writer with a great wit. Freida died in a
tragic fire in Philadelphia in 1912
Correspondence 2/5/01 Stan Saucier
My mother told me a story that my great grandmother immigrated from
Lithuania by herself at age fourteen (14). She believes the name of the
ship was the Rotterdam.
I was looking over a list of names I found on the site and found:
597 E 18 M. Tann?l?nas*
From your notes listed at the bottom, I see the question marks might be
"e"'s or "i"'s or one of each. My great grandmother's first name was
Magdalena and her maiden name was Tomalonis (or something like that). I
think it may be possible passenger #597 is my great grandmother.
Thank you very much.
