I, H. Winter, Master of the SS Rhein do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at Bremen and that the said vessel has now arrived and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage; the country to whihc each belongs and also the country of which it is intended by each to inhabit. This Manifest truly sets forth the Number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Sworn to this 21st Mar. 1881 H. Winter, Captain Before me ??? He was born in Oberhausen, Oldenburg, Germany in 1864. He had his 17th Birthday on the ship on the way to the US. He first went to Homestead, Iowa then later settled in Pender, Nebraska. He married Bertha Buhrmann in 1888. They had twelve children Henry, Wilhelm, Frieda, Emma, Albert, Carl, Dora, Herman, Martha, Rudolf (my father), Leona and Ella. The second "n" was dropped from the last name around 1896 and became Wichman. Darlene Garrity Correspondence 09/03/01 passenger #378 HANDERMANN Mathias Handerman settled in Toledo, OH, and bore three children: Edward (my grandfather), Louis and Emma. Mathias died in Aug. 1904.
