Transcriber's Notes:
* It appears that quotation marks (") were used indiscriminately to fill
any blank spaces on the manifest form, therefore only the notation "do"
was interpreted to mean the same as the line above.
* The Country to which they severally belong had a single entry on the
first line in the list, Ireland. The country in which they intend to
become inhabitatants was not indicated.
* The question mark (?) indicates a letter or letters that could not be read.
Transcriber's Comment:
* The ships manifest indicates the passage was from Harve to New York.
On the other hand the only indication of the nationality of the passengers
is Irish. Did the ship stop at a port somewhere in Ireland?
* My guess is that the manifest was completed by the master, whose native
language was French and who had a rudementary knowledge of English. What
resulted was a "French soundex" of the names of his passengers who spoke
English with an Irish accent. In addition the spelling is inconsistent and
the penmanship rather poor.
Correspondence 04/19/2003 passengers #45-51 Gugoucy - believed to be Gugerty
In the Manifest dated July 29, 1828, on a French sailing ship named,
"Ship Quatre Freres," there is the passengers being listed as:
Sebastian or passenger numbered #45, and through passenger number 51
or Cassandra. The name makes no sense but it appears to be the name
we refer to as Gugerty.
My Great Great Grandfather was Michael Gugerty, who passed away in
1864, leaving behind 3 kids and 600 acres of land in Kansas. James Sylvester,
the youngest of the 3 kids came west in the late 1800's and opened up the
first White Sewing machine outlet west of the Rocky Mountains, and the
Gugerty's in the East and Midwest are still separated. So let's get in
touch, and start sharing. David J. Gugerty
