Ship Manhattan
I, Thos. Dixon, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York, contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Ship Manhattan whereof I am Master, from Liverpool. Transcriber's Notes:
*An * indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not the
transcriber, or that there is a transcriber's note referring to the item
with the *.
*The ? marks indicates letters or words that cannot be read due to the
quality of the original document.
*All Passengers intended to inhabit the United States.
*There were two deaths reported on this voyage. Passenger #114 Sarah
Shipley died April 20, 1855. Passenger #243 Franz Leidel 7 months old,
no date was listed for his death.
*Passengers 1 - 95 were in 2nd Class Cabins.
*Passengers 96 - 359 were Steerage Passengers.
*Passengers 1-95 are numbered as they were on the manifest. Since no one
was listed as #96, the rest of the list was renumbered to keep the
numbers consecutive.
*Abbreviations were written with a raised last letter and no period.
The person who wrote the manifest made a,e,i,o,u, m and n very similar,
looking like an "i" or series of "i's" without dots. Lower case "l" and
"t" look alike, except that most (but not all) of the time the "t" was
crossed and the "l" was not.
*8 Helbury could be Helberry.
*16 ??hweth could be Ashweth. There is a blotch over the beginning of
the name. There could be 1 or 2 letters.
*17 ?li??? could be Oliver.
*19 Shirlow could be Sherlow. The third letter looks like an "i" but
does not have a dot over it.
*32 Goldbe? could be Goldbeg or Goldberg.
*59 and 60 Brocks could be Brooks. On the manifest the "o" was not
always closed on the right side before connecting to the next letter.
*68 and 69 Luson could be Leeson.
*70 The third letter could be a "b" or an "f". Lip?ller could be Lipfller
or Lipbller.
*71 and 72 May could be Muy.
*76 Green could be Grun.
*78 Age 24 could be 29.
*83 Mc?ainne? could be McLainnep or McLainess. The first missing letter
looks like an "L", but it extends below the line. The last letter
is either "p" or the symbol for double "s".
*88 Pellet could be Pillet.
*91 Kirbak could be Kirbuk.
*95 Crowe could be Crowl.
*114 Sarah Shipley died April 20, 1855.
*124 and 125 Quirk could be Quick.
*173 Mc?ainne? could be McLainnep or McLainess. See *83.
*174 and 175 Conrey could be Cowrey.
*195 Cunans could be Canens.
*201 and 202 Lehane could be Leham.
*204 and 205 Twohy could be Toohy.
*207 Visley could be Vesley or Vidley.
*214 Haskins could be Hackins or Harkins.

*265 Goldehiry - The e, i and y could each be something else.

*271 G?trul could be Gutrul or Gietrul.
*272 Patt?sen could be Pattersen.
*274 Mary was written over a name that had been erased
and they forgot to change male to female.
*276 Bunch could be Bauch or Branch.
*279 Bucheld could be Bacheld.
*280 Mc?ainne? could be McLainness or McLainnep. See #83
*282 Sua?es could be Suaves.
*287 Mc?iten could be McNiten.
*288 There is an upstroke at the end of Brown that could be another letter.
*290 McClactie could be McClartie.
*294 Marris could be Maccio, letters 3 and 4 are like "i"s that have not
had dots. The last letter is either an"o" or an "s".
*301 to 304 Muhan could be Mahan.
*305 Breen could be Brien. The occupation could be servant.
*344 Burnes could be Barnes.
*345 ?uny could be Juny or Tuny.
