Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the
transcriber, or in some cases refers to a note. The ? indicates letters or words
that cannot be read due to the quality of the original document, and will also be
elaborated upon below according to the passenger number.
* All passengers were from "G. Britain", which was only written once at the beginning,
and were bound for the "U. States" which was written just once in column "Country of
which they wish to become inhabitants". In the column for "Occupation", "Laborer" was
written only once, at the beginning. Therefore, these three columns have been omitted.
On the first page, in the column "Number that have died on the voyage", which I have
also omitted, someone had calculated some numbers, but the first part of the calculations
are badly smeared with ink, and what remains does not make much sense:
46
___
?4
36
___
120
No other pages have any notations in this column; the 21 persons who died on the
voyage are instead listed at the end, in a much lighter ink, with the notation "dead"
in the column for occupations. There apparently not being room on that page for the
entire column, there is a notation "over", with the last seven names apparently written
on the other side of the page.
Three of the passengers are listed both in the main list, with lines
drawn through their names, and at the end of the list, among the 21
dead. The other 18 "dead" passengers were not on the main list.
* The original list was not numbered; I have added the numbering in accordance with ISTG
guidelines.
* Although the country to which the passengers belong was given only as Great Britain, I
believe it includes passengers from Ireland, particularly County Armagh. The sworn
statement says that the list "...contains the names of all the Passengers taken on board
the said Ship Barque at the Port of Liverpool OR AT ANY TIME SINCE...", implying that the ship may
have stopped and picked up passengers at other ports (such as Queenstown in Ireland). At
this time all of Ireland was still considered as part of Great Britain, so that even if
the ship did not stop at any port in Ireland, passengers who embarked at Liverpool could
still have been Irish. It was common for the Irish to first cross the Channel to Liverpool
in a different ship and then board another ship for the U.S.(Thomas Gallalgher, "Paddy's
Lament", Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1982; pp. 149-150).In any case, some of my collateral
ancestors, who were definitely from Ireland, were on the ship, along with some who, though
not related to me, were their neighbors, based on census returns and other evidence. I
discovered this because Owen McKee stated on his naturalization petition that he had "landed
at New Orleans Nov. 1, 1849". Upon checking all the ships that had landed in New Orleans
in November 1849, I discovered this one, with his name, as well as (to my surprise and
delight)Peter Garland, his cousin, Ann Garland (probably his cousin and Peter's sister),
and John McKee (his brother or cousin). In addition there were several McArdles, who were
close neighbors. I have no definite evidence that the McArdles on this ship were also from
Co. Armagh, but I think it highly likely. Peter Garland, John McKee, and Owen McKee, ended
up in Kentucky (Lexington and Richmond), where they joined an older McKee brother, Phillip,
who had emigrated in 1846 on the ship Sweden. They were all from an area around
Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh. I will be glad to correspond and exchange more information
about these families with anyone interested. Julie Hu
** The name of the ship is written in three different ways: on the cover as
Ship John D Wolf
in the sworn statement, the letter after "John" appears to be a capital "S", independent of
any other letter: John S De Wolf. But in the following "List of all passengers..." the "S"
is clearly attached to the word John: Ship Johns De Wolf". I enquired about the name in the
"Ships-L" discussion group and was told that though such a ship was not listed in Lloyd's
Register under that name in 1847, the writer was aware of ship owner by the name of De Wolf,
based in Liverpool.
2 The two letters could be n, or na: Hennly, or Henaly. There is a short diagonal line
between the two letters, but I don't know what that could signify.
11 The letters after the v in the surname and before the y could be "enir", or "emr" or
"esvir" : Reveniry, Revesviry, Revemry
18 Could be Curtis or C?ntis
31 Sex not indicated, but assume was female
33-34 Surname could be Kinney or Kearney
40 Fourth letter of first name could be l: Rodly
42 Surname could be McGuines or McGruines
44 Surname could be Durna or Duma
46 Surname could be Quirm, Quirnce, Quirnet
47-51 First two letters of surname could be Ke, Ki, Re, or Ri: Kelly, Killy, Rilly,
or Relly
52: First letter of surname is written in lower case: egan
54 Second letter of surname could be u or a; third could be q or g; 4th could be u or n:
Mugners; Maquers, Muquers
59 A line is drawn through the name, and a blot obscures the age, which may be 50.
This person is also listed at the end, with the notation "dead". In
that list her age is clearly 50.
62 A line is drawn through the name. This person is also listed at the end,
with the notation "dead".
68 At first glance looks like Kidly; but may be Kelly, Kedly, or Kully
82 First name could be Issee or Issu
87 Second letter of first name looks like n or w, or possibly u. But none of these seem
needed; without that letter, the name is Edward, and with it, simply appears to be a
spelling mistake.
96 Line drawn through name; age could be 2 or 3, but there is a flourish at the end that
could possibly be an abbreviated 0, making his age 20 or 30. This
person is also listed at the end, with the notation "dead". In that
list his age is clearly 20.
97-103 Surname looks like Hayfu, but could also be Hayfee
109 Second digit of age not clear
111 First name originally written as Honora; line drawn through it, and Philip written
above.
113 Not sure how many letters follow the second letter in the first name; could be Lavim,
Lanin, Larim
126 Surname could be Crarsbey, Crursbey, or Craubey
135 The fourth letter of the surname is not clear, but extends above the line. The fifth
letter looks like g, z, or y. Buddy, Bud?y
160 No age is given for Mathew Tobin.
165 The fourth letter of the surname could be an s or a t; the fifth letter could be t or
l or b. Crotty, Crosty, Crosby
173 Surname could be Hanlon or Hanton
179 Peter Garland is believed to be from Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh, Ireland, probably a
brother of Ann Garland, and a cousin of passengers #180 and #183, Owen and John P. McKee.
He eventually went to Lexington, Ky. For more information contact transcriber.
180 Owen McKee was from Newtownhamilton area of Co. Armagh. He was cousin of Passenger 179,
Peter Garland, and either brother or cousin of Passenger 183, John P. McKee. Eventually
fought on Confederate side in Civil War, and became prosperous merchant in Richmond, KY.
For more information contact transcriber.
183 John P. McKee was also from Newtownhamilton area of Co. Armagh. Was either brother or
cousin of Passenger #180, Owen McKee, and cousin of Peter Garland, Passenger #179. He also
emigrated to Lexington, Ky. and also lived in Richmond, KY. For more information contact
transcriber.
186 Surname could be McAny or McArvy
187 In the surname, before "Na??n" several letters are almost completely obscured by an ink
blot. Not sure if it was deliberate, and surname is really Na??n (the N seems to be a
capital letter)or if it was accidental and there should be some letters before "Na??n"(the
last letter under the blot extends below the line and the letter before that extends
above it). The letter(s) after the a could be "n" or "vi": Nann, Navin. Not sure if
her age is 10 or 20.
190 Sex not indicated, but assume is female.
192 The handwriting is rather clear. The first letter really is a lower case s, and the
third letter seems clearly to be an "n", but that makes the name unprounceable; so, it may
be a u followed by an i, or an i followed by aa u: Spnition; Spuition; Spiution
194 The first letter of the surname is partially concealed by an ink blot, but could be a K:
Kernan
200 Surname could be Lanlep or Laulep
201-206 Surname could be Loyd or Lloyd
207 No obvious parent with this surname shown elsewhere on the list.
210 May have been a child of Passenger 39, Bridget Murphy
211 May have been a child of Passenger 188, Cecilly Kelly
212 Also listed as Passenger 59
213 Also listed as Passenger 62
214 Also listed as Passenger 96
215-216 No obvious parent with this surname shown elsewhere on the
list
219 No obvious parent with this surname shown elsewhere on the list
220 Name and other information unreadable due to microfilming. Apparently
was written at very bottom of original page, after which is the note
(over), with the remaining names written on the other side.
226 May have been a child of Passenger 201, Mary Ann L?oyd
