The transcriber, Don Schmalbeck was pleased to find his
ancestors on this ship.
They were the Schmaddebeck family, Passengers 141-144. The Johann who
died at sea was his 2nd-Great-Grandfather. This family was from the
village of Nieder Steffenshagen, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, located between
Bad Doberan and Kröpelin, just west of Rostock near the Baltic coast.
There is a town called Schmadebeck on the map today, just to the southeast
of Kröpelin. This town name was first recorded circa 1250 AD.
Other families are known with the spelling Schmalbeck from farther east
and south, especially from the area between the Schwerinsee and Plau.
Maria's (Marie's) maiden name is Clasen, and her family is from just
farther west of Steffenshagen, in Biendorf. Marie's father Johann was
a dairyman there. Marie and son Henry show up in the 1870 Illinois census
in Chicago, both with the changed spelling: Schmalbeck. No furhter record
has been found of either of them [yet].
John (Johann, the younger) was christened Johann Peter Christian Schmaddebeck,
and shows up in the 1880 Illinois census also spelled Schmalbeck.
John was blacksmith for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad,
and was killed in a train accident in 1924, while at work.
John's father, Johann Joachim Schmaddebeck was a farmer, and
John's grandfather, Johann Joachim Andreas Schmaddebeck, was born in
Heiligenhagen, Mecklenburg and was a wheel maker.
There is no known reason for the change in spelling, although it seems
likely that it just hadn't yet been standardized. Among known relations
of the 18th and 19th centuries the following spellings are also recorded:
Schmabeck, Schmaddebeck, Schmadebeck, Schmadbek, Schmadbeks, Schmadelbeck,
Schmalbeck, Schmalbuck, Schmarbeck, and Schmedbek. Anyone researching
family trees should consider seriously the various ways that his/her
ancestors could have spelled (and others could have misspelled) the name.
Other Schmaddebecks of close relation emigrated to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
They used the spelling Schmadebeck.
Another family using Schmadebeck, left Rostock for the Chicago area in 1925.
There are still families in Germany using Schmaddebeck and Schmalbeck.
A picture of John (Johann Schmaddebeck) Schmalbeck,
right, with his son George. John was born in Nieder Steffenshagen,
Mecklenburg 6 Oct 1850, and emigrated on the Ship John Bertram
in November 1866, with his father Johann, who died at sea, mother Maria,
and older brother Heinrich. Maria, Heinrich, and John settled in Chicago.
