Transcriber's Notes:
* Original did not state if this was the captain or the collector for the district.
#24 surname spelled as found, but probably Seymour variation.
#36 age either 30 or 35.
#39-44 letter(s) in surname either ss or p.
#42 age completely obliterated by hole in original paper.
Correspondence 09/14/2004 passengers #1-15, #24-30 Alford, Elston, Jones, Seamore, Leget
#25 Elizabeth Seamore's family name was Caws.
The list confirms with a hymn book written by one of them listing
the names that sailed. I have that book.
The Saragasso data is handed down thru relatives. There were 32 souls of
my ancestors on this ship.
These are the people who sailed on the Henry Clay from the Isle of Wight,
sometime in April 1820. (I think from Portsmouth but don’t know for sure.)
Lines 1 thru 15, and 24 thru 30 are my ancestors.
(There were 4 or 5 other surnames that were not related.)
I am searching for information on the below-named surnames:
Alford, Elston, Jones, Seamore, Seymour.
They left in 1820 bound for the New World, USA.
On the way, the captain of the sailing vessel got drunk and lost the way.
They sailed and sailed and finally ended up in the Sargasso Sea.
The crew asked the passengers to sign a petition to put the captain in chains
and the crew navigated the ship to port.
Due to their being lost and wound up in the Saragasso Sea for a period of time
(I don't know how long), they arrived 4 Sept 1820. I would
appreciate any data on any of them. Especially sibs and parents. I have
most of them tracked after their arrival in the USA.
They landed at Baltimore, (Havre de Grace) Maryland after 110 days at sea.
There is a recorded birth of Ann Elisabeth Lonnon, July 26, 1819, in Baltimore, Maryland.
(Ann Elisabeth Lonnon's parents were Jane Jones and Richard William Lonnon,
therefore I believe this recording of the birth to be in error.)
Had it not been for the canned fruits, meats, jellies, and wine the women had
brought along to their new homes, they would have starved before reaching America.
I am posting this list in the hope that some one will recognize a name and have
some information for me. George Seymour and Charlotte Jones were married in Louisville,
Jefferson, KY, USA about 1829. They are my G-Greatgrandparents.
The number to the right of each name is their age, as
reported by them on the immigration papers. The next number is an
estimated date of birth that I assigned to each one:
Ann Alford, 25, 1795
John Alford, 25, 1795
Isreal Alford, 7, 1813
Jacob Alford, 2, 1818
John Elston, 25, 1795
Sarah Elston, 30, 1790
Jacob Jones, 22, 1798
Hannah Jones, 48, 1772
Eliabeth Jones, 14, 1806
Mary Jones, 12, 1808
Charlotte Jones, 6, 1814
Elizabeth Seamore, 50, 1770
Richard Seymour
George Seymour
Jane Seymour
Rich Seymour
Harvey Seymour
Solomon Seymour
I would appreciate any information on them, especially their parents and
sibs and the others as well, as they are also relations.
OBIT:
George Seymour (Seymore) in 1829 married Charlotte Jones and
settled in Louisville, KY. (They are my GGreatgrandparents.)
Their parents, with their respective families, had removed from England
in 1819 to Indiana, the Seymours coming from the Isle of Wight and
the Jones's from Portsmouth.
Mr. Seymour became a river man, being engaged in flat-boating for
a while. In 1827 he commenced steam boating on the Ohio and Mississippi
Rivers and continued in that position until his death in 1851 at the age of
51 years. He was an earnest member of the Methodist Church. He bore a
high reputation as a pilot and was well-known as a man of piety and integrity.
Two sisters-in-law of Mr. Seymour, Mrs. John Alford and Mrs. John Elstone,
settled in Louisville as early as 1822 and several of their children still
reside there, B. F. Alford the druggist being one of them.
Please contact Larry Seymour
if you are researching the names of this family.
