SS Hansa
I, E. Bricknerstein, master of S.S. Hansa do solemnly, sincerely and truly that the following List or Manifest subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said S.S. Hansa at Bremen from which port said Bremen has now arrived arrived, and that on said list is truly designated the ages, the sex, and the occupation of each said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant: and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Correspondence 05/11/02 passenger 481 Barth
Passenger #481, Ludwig Barth was my great grandfather. He settled in
Syracuse and became a tailor. He married a Mary Alletzhauser who he
subsequently abandoned. His son, Raymond W. Barth was my grandfather.
Raymond married Molly Carroll and had one child, Raymond J. Barth (nee
Raymond Ludwig Barth), my father, who became an attorney and spent 18
years on the New York State Family Court, County of Onondaga, Bench. My
father married Mary E. Murphy, and I am one of identical twins and have
a younger sister. All of us have children, and some have grandchildren.

Correspondence 12/11/02 passengers #407 & 408 Weger/Woeger & Bezler
#407 and #408 are my great great grandparents on my father's side.
Though the last name is misspelled, Michael Woeger (spelled Weger on the
manifest) married Catherine Bezler the same year they sailed for
America, 1870. Michael was born in 1847 and Catherine was born in 1849,
both in Wuerttemberg.
We have found a record of his christening at the LDS search site for
March 1847. Though he was listed as a carpenter on the manifest, he went
to work at a sugar factory when he finally settled in Brooklyn. He
became a Vorman (Foreman) and purchased the house at 183 St. Nicholas
Avenue, Ridgewood, Brooklyn, NY. The Woegers had several children,
though some died before adulthood. The ones that lived were Catherine
A.(my great grandmother), Joseph, Louise and Mary.
Michael & Catherine's daughter Catherine A., married Louis C. Ritter of
New Jersey, who was also of German descent. Catherine and Louis had
three children, Marie, Valentine and Louis A. Ritter (my grandfather.)
The home that the Woeger's owned on St. Nicholas Avenue, is where my
father, Louis V. Ritter and his brother, Thomas J. Ritter grew up.
Michael and Catherine Woeger are believed to have died in Ridgewood and
the house then became (possibly through estate sale) their daughter
Catherine's and her husband's. I believe they are all buried in the same
place. know the name Woeger is on the headstone of their grave at St.
John's Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, NY.
Though it is misspelled as Weger on this ship, I am certain it is them
because the name is not uncommonly misspelled, their first names are
listed right next to each other, the year of immigration is right
(1870), the town they both came from is right, though also misspelled
(it is Wuerttemberg not Wurttemberg, which was only formed in 1952 with
the combining of the kingdoms of Baden and Wuerttemberg) and their ages
are exactly right (23 for him and 21 for her). They are listed right
next to each other, but were not married until they reached New York.
They may have only decided to marry on the way over. Her maiden name is
listed as Catherine Bezler. Maureen E. Ritter
