Ship Guttenberg
I, H. Visser, do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest of Passengers, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs for the District of New York, contains to the best of my knowledge and belief, a just and true account of all the Passengers received on board the Ship Guttenberg, whereof I am Master, from Hamburg. So help me God. (signed) H. Visser. Sworn to this May 10th, 1855. (signed) signature illegible
LIST or MANIFEST of all the PASSENGERS taken on board the Ship Guttenberg whereof H. Visser, is master, from Hamburg burthen 622 tons.
Columns represent: names, age (in years or months), sex, occupation, the country to which they severally belong and luggage (subcolumns for trunk and case, replacing Died on Voyage). Because all passengers were destined for the United States, the column for the Country in which they intend to become inhabitants has been eliminated. There was one death on this voyage, and it is noted on the line with the passenger's name.

Transcriber's Notes:
An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder not
the transcriber.
The ? marks indicate letters or words that cannot be read due to the
quality of the original document.
It appears that two persons wrote this list. The first recorder wrote
passengers #1 - #4, and the second person wrote #5 - #278.
The second recorder of this list is inconsistent in letter formation
and abbreviation of first names. Some abbreviations are followed by a
period and some are not. Most of the first names beginning with the
letter F are not capitalized, but a few are, and there are misspellings
among the occupations.
1 Occupation appears to be Peutier or Reutier. A list of old German
occupations has reuter (rider, clearer of land) and reiter (rider,
cavalryman).
2 Gaerke could be Gaenke. The occupation appears to be spelled
Ochorous or Ochonous. Perhaps it is the same as passenger 32 (ocronom),
which could be oeconom (small farmer, farm manager, steward, innkeeper
or economist).
7 Occupation is probably merchant.
8 Mildenstein could possibly be Mildenstan. America is misspelled.
10 Occupation is probably weaver.
12 Lautnup could be Lautrup. There is an extra short upward stroke
between the u and the p, which could be an undotted i or a non-looped e.
(This would add Lautnuip, Lautnuep Lautruip or Lautruep as possible
surnames ). This pen stroke could also be where the recorder paused
between letters and left an unintentional mark.
13 The recorder appears to have reversed the order of a leading s
(which resembles a lower case f) and the lower case s (which should
follow the leading s).
19 and 21 Law could be Lau.
27 Occupation could possibly be glazer or glazier.
31 Bruger could be Brieger or Breiger; occupation is probably merchant.
32 Occupation could be oeconom (small farmer, farm manager, steward,
innkeeper or economist).
33 Occupation is probably merchant.
34 Have found no occupation that appears to fit this spelling.
35 Beohm could be Boehm; occupation is probably merchant.
45 Occupation is probably tailor.
48 Occupation is probably merchant.
53 A joiner was a wood craftsman.
54 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
57 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
58 Occupation is probably weaver.
60 Occupation is probably merchant.
62 Occupation is written s- which appears to indicate the same as above,
which is baker.
63 The original list begins numbering with 1,2,3 again for the
Betweendecks Passengers. The numbering sequence is being continued to
avoid having duplicate numbers for some passengers.
67 and 68 Occupation is probably tailor.
69 and 70 Occupation is probably peddler.
72 Occupation is probably tailor.
82 First name could be Jetle or Jesse.
86 Sturunder could be Starunder.
88 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
105 A joiner was a person who worked with wood or was a wood craftsman.
118 First name could be Joachim.
120-122 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
124-126 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
126 Randow could be Randaw.
128 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
130 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
139 Occupation is probably weaver.
141 Occupation is probably weaver.
143 A cooper is a maker of barrels.
147 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
152 The name fried Bergmann was written on this line. It has a line
drawn through it and Joh Hellrich written above it.
153 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
154-155 A list of old German occupations includes weber (weaver).
163 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name. Brassen could be Brasfen,
but, as in passenger 13, it appears that the leading s was reversed.
164 Occupation could possibly be tiller.
166 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name. Occupation could be weaver.
169 Occupation could be weaver.
171 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
174 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
175 A first name Wilh. is written and scratched through. Maria Krieger is written
on the line to the right of it.
178 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
186 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
188 Age could be 54 or 34, but 34 doesn't seem likely when compared to the ages of
others in the family.
192, 193 and 194 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
198 Lena could be Lera.
201-203 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
203 Occupation is probably shoemaker.
204 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
206 Occupation could be weaver.
210 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name. Last name could be Hawisen.
211-216 Last name could be Hawisen.
217-218 Occupation could be weaver.
221 Occupatin could be weaver.
222 Occupation could be tiller.
226 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name. Occupation could be weaver.
227 Garagnon could be Ganagnon, and the first letter of his occupation could be
c or p (polerer or colorer).
232 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
236 Handun could be Hanclun. There's a space between the d (or cl) and the un.
237 Baey could be Baaf or Baez.
241 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
241-245 Kopke could be Kupke.
245 Elise could be Clise.
247 The letter in question could be t, making the name Litimer.
248 Roterdanz could be Ruterdanz.
250-251 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
255 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
257-259 Inappropriate use of lower case f in the first name.
260 Occupation is probably tailor.
273 Occupation is probably tailor.
274 A joiner was a wood craftsman.
277 The words Whas(was) born have a line drawn through them. The 8.
following Whas born appears to indicate age at death, or days lived.
No gender was indicated.
