Correspondence 4/3/01 passengers 48 & 57 BROWNETT

William Brownett passenger number 48 and his sister Mary Ann Brownett
passenger number 57 on the Glenmark voyage on 15 November 1867 must
have disembarked at Auckland as they then went to settle in Thames.
They were from Cheltenham in Gloustershire and came to join their
sister Marie and her husband George Marshall and their two children
who had come to NZ on the ship Bombay two years earlier and had also
settled in Thames.

William worked as a miner and was fatally injured in a mining accident
in the Tararu Creek area, he died in 1889.

He had married Elizabeth Harding from Grantham Linc. in Thames in 1875
at St George's Church Rev Lush officiating. They had three children
who survived those difficult times and two who died.

Elizabeth Brownett predeceased William dying in 1886.

They are buried with their two babies in the old Tararu Cemetery on
the Thames Coast.

Mary Ann Brownett worked as the maid for Rev Lush and his family and
later married without children.

Rev Lush makes reference to the Brownettes having added an "e" at the
end of their surname in his published diaries.

The writer has done considerable research on the family as she is a
Great Granddaughter of William Brownett. Jill Pritchard
