SS Ethiopia
I, John Wilson Master of the SS Ethiopia do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said vessel at Glasgow and Moville from which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of said passengers, the location of the compartment of space occupied by each during the passage, the country or citizenship of each, and also the destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage; and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of those who died; also the pieces of baggage of each; also a true statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this country. Transcriber's Notes:
If you are looking for a particular family, do not stop when you have found one. All families
may not be together on the list.
While this ship picked up passengers in Glasgow, Scotland, and Moville, Ireland, there is no
indication on the list as to what passengers came from each port.
The Captain has assigned the number of pieces of baggage to only one person in each family,
usually head of household.

151: Bernhard Mechanik was a brother of the transcriber’s grandmother Olga “Goldie”
Mechanic Mack. The family in Chicago spelled the name Mechanic. He appears to be the
first of this family to emigrate. His parents, two sisters and a brother came a few
years later. He died in Oak Forest IL on 27 Mar 1925. He appears to have been married
twice, with a daughter by the first wife, a son by the second. He was known to my father
and his sister as Uncle Barney who worked as a machinist and played a mandolin. My
generation, all born 9 years and more after his death, knows little about him.

Correspondence 07/18/02 passenger #13, 19, 20 Gray and Charleton
#19, Mrs. A. Gray, is my great grandmother, Margaret Laird Gray,
wife of Alexander P. Gray, and #20, William Gray, is my grandfather.
They were traveling from Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland, to Minneapolis MN
to reunite with Alexander P. Gray who had gone on ahead. Mrs Charleton
#13 is my 2 great grandmother, Jane McLintock Laird Charleton, mother
of Margaret Laird Gray. Margaret "Mickey" Gray Fast
