I, James Kennedy, Master of the SS City of Chester, do solemnly, sincerely and truly Swear that the following List or Manifest subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said Vessel at Liverpool and Queenstown from which port said Steamship has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, sex and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. 318-322 Surname ending is tight and small, but all 3 or 4 more letters are midline
with nothing above or below the midline range.
321 First name is clearly Karen so sex is probably F, was indicated by ditto marks.
338 First name is clearly Mary so sex is probably F, was indicated by ditto marks.
349 First name is clearly Lydia so sex is probably F, was indicated by ditto marks.
351-352 Missing surname letters are all midline, guess at Borasy, Boxasy, Borany, or
Boxany or similar.
383 First name is clearly Mary so sex is probably F, was indicated by ditto marks.
385 Age is indistinct on original. Second number is a circle, probably bottom of a 0 or 8,
for a 20 or 28.
391 Surname letters are small and tight, possibly Hads??th, best guess is a spelling
like Hadstith or Hadekith.
430-431 First names Jas and Jno are consistently used for male names (James and John usually),
so sex is probably M, was indicated by ditto marks.
439 Age has wrinkle or tear; both numbers look like the bottoms of 3 or 5, could be 33,
35, 53, or 55.
498 Surname ending is tight and small, but remaining letters are all midline with
no marks above or below the midline range with the exception of a dot at the end
indicating a 'i' might be used in the last letter or so.
518 Age unclear, probably 37 or 57.
549 First names clearly say 'Marth A" with a space between, but possibly this should be
Martha. Surname is Ha, followed by two letters which go below the line, and then
2 or 3 midline letters. Letters are tight and small.
555 First name is clearly Axel so sex is probably M, was indicated by ditto marks.
556 Questionable letter appears to be midline, possibly India.
558-559 Surname is Latrill or Lahill.
562 Missing letters are midline, with nothing above or below that. Possibly Maren,
Mann or Manu.
573-574 Surname is Laret or Lanet.
579 Surname after B is all midline, with nothing above or below that.
580 First letter of name is not like others; begins with a loop at the top like
writer's 'L', then makes a tiny loop to the right side of the downstroke
before breaking off above the line.
583 First name not clear, appears to be possibly Sijn or Sejiv.
589 First name is Agnes so sex is probably F, was indicated by ditto marks.
591 Age is poorly written; 4 followed by an upward stroke, downward stroke, and
stroke halfway back up. Possibly poorly written 44 or 47.
592 End of surname is small and tight midline letter, appears to be Janssn;
probably Janssen.
607-609 The missing letter is a midline letter, but is unclear; probably Shasach,
Shesach, Shisach, Shosach, or Shusach.
615 As odd as this name looks, it actually is pretty clear. Last letter could
be 't' or 'k'.
