Bark Argonaut

I, H. Peengrafe, Master of the Bark Argonaut do solemnly, sincerely, and truly affirm that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York is a full and perfect list of all passengers taken on board of the said Bark at (port of departure not filled in) from which port said Bark has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and part of the ship occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant , and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died.

Transcriber's notes:  An asterisk indicates a footnote. All
passengers were from Germany except # 1 (from the U.S.), and the
destination of all passengers was the U.S; consequently, the columns for the
country from whence all came, and the column for the destination (U.S.)
were omitted in this list.  There were no deaths or births on voyage; those
columns have also been omitted from this list.

         baker)

Note:  Passengers #49 and #53 are great-great grandmother and great
          grandmother of the transcriber of this list, Gene Janssen.  They
          settled in Plymouth County IA.

Correspondence 6/28/00
Passenger #139 is my great grandfather.  Johannes Fischer, the son of 
Johann Jacob Fischer, was born May 17, 1830 in Kleinschmalkalden 
(Thuringia).  He married Rosine Catherine Fredericka Hildebrandt of 
the village of Brotterode (Thuringia).  Johannes became a master baker 
in the village of Kleinschmalkalden where they raised 4 children.

Johannes sailed alone on the Bark Argonaut in 1868.  His wife, children 
and two other relatives followed him in June 1871 as passengers #155-163 
on the SS Thuringia.  SS Thuringia  This family settled in Chicago, Illinois.
