Transcriber's notes:
The ship's name was abbreviated in the sworn statement as:
Ship Amn (Am raised n) Eagle, which was probably used to
signify: Ship American Eagle.
The Deputy Collector's name was illegible.
All of the passengers intended to become inhabitants of the
United States, so that column has been eliminated.
One passenger died on the voyage. That column has been
eliminated and the information listed in the transcriber's
notes.
4 The country is listed as Mitcham, which is probably in what is
now the Greater London area of England.
6 There was no gender listed for this passenger.
7 There was no gender listed for this passenger.
61 The original recorder listed the sex of this passenger as female.
65 The occupation of this passenger is illegible.
88-101 The numbers listed for each passenger have been rewritten so
they are consecutive. The original recorder listed two
passengers as number 87, and omitted number 101.
102 There was no gender listed for this passenger.
113 The spelling of this passenger's surname is as listed on the
manifest, and may be an error on the part of the original
recorder.
117 The original recorder placed a ditto in the age column for
months. This may have been an error, or the passenger may
have been 25 years 9 months old.
144 There was no gender listed for this passenger.
155 There was no gender listed for this passenger.
168 The spelling of this passenger's surname is as listed on the
manifest and may be an error on the part of the original
recorder.
177 In the "Died on the Voyage" column, this passenger
is listed as Deceased.
Correspondence 07/27/02 Captain Moore
Captain George Moore was born in 1792 in Littlehampton, England to William
and Mary Hammond Moore. He began his maritime career as a cabin boy when
he was ten years old. By 1815 he was 1st mate of the Caldicott Castle which
had been chartered as a tender to the British fleet. In 1817 he emigrated
to the United States where he married Emily Matilda Warner, first settling
in New York City and then in what is now Old Lyme, Connecticut. Their
children were Emily Edgar, Washington Irving (named for the author who
was a friend), Kathleen O., and Daniel Kingsland (also a sea captain).
Two other children, George and John H. died young. Capt. George was in
command of the Comet in 1821. He became one of the founders of the London
Line which plied between New York and London, England. When George Moore
died in 1849, he was part owner of the American Eagle, Northumberland,
Hendrik Hudson, Devonshire and the Westminster.
Richard Hale Moore, the nephew of Capt. George Moore, was born to Thomas
and Sarah Hale Moore of Sussex , England in 1820. He was fostered as a
son by Captain George Moore. Among the ships he commanded were the
American Eagle, the Adriatic and the Saybrook. He and his wife, Mary, had
at least one daughter Florence Mary.
According to a family story, he sailed out of New York Harbor in 1865 and
was never heard from again.
Daniel Kingsland Moore, son of Captain George Moore, also became a sea captain,
commanding the American Eagle for a time. In 1869 Daniel sailed for Shanghai
in charge of the Good Hope but died after being on duty for many hours during
rough seas. He was buried at sea off the island of Madagascar at only 28
years of age.
As the clipper ships gave way to the steamers, the remaining members of the
Moore family were forced to migrate west in search of a new way of life.
