I, B. VON HAGEN, Master of the N ? Bark Amaranth, do solemnly swear, sincerely and truly that the following List or Manifest subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a list of all the passengers taken on board of the said vessel at Bremen, said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passenger of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died. Transcriber's Notes:
From the American Heritage Dictionary we find the
definition of a bark/barque: (noun): a sailing ship with from three to five
masts, all of them square rigged except the after mast, which is
fore-and-aft rigged. A small sailing vessel.

Correspondence 01/13/2004 passengers #33 & 34 Grunewalt
Berta Grunewalt became Bertha Grunewald in America. She is listed as
coming from Prussia and after ten years of searching (including weeks
at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City), there is no
indication of where she came from in Germany. In November 1870,
she married Carl Mannigel in Lowell, Dodge County, Wisconsin. She
had arrived with her son Hermann who took the last name of Mannigel.
Carl and Bertha added 4 more children to their family: John Charles
in 1871, William Frederick in 1874, Berthe Louise in 1875, and
Robert Carl in 1878. The family moved to Hand County, South Dakota
for a while and then to Hardwick, Rock County, Minnesota. Bertha
died in 1910 and is buried in the cemetery in Luverne, Rock County,
Minnesota.
Hermann Grunewalt became Herman Mannigel. The family a couple of
generations later always assumed that Herman was the son of
Carl Mannigel but after research showed that he had arrived with
his mother Bertha, there was confusion as to whether Carl Mannigel
had fathered him in Germany before coming to America himself in
1867 or whether he was fathered by someone else in Germany. He
married Minnie Schultz in Hand County, South Dakota in 1887 and
had five children. Herman died in Luverne, Rock County, Minnesota
in March 1939. Marty Gale

This Kruger family settled in Lowell Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin.
In the 1880 US Census for that place, William, Tena (shortened from Ernestine),
and Hermann are all living on a farm. Their daughter, Emilie is shown in the
Wisconsin Marriages, pre 1907, as having married on July 22, 1881.
