the first 27.

Correspondence added 8-1-2006, OAKLEY
The passengers in question on the Acasta were George Oakley and three of
his sisters. George had come to New York some time before 1820 in the
aftermath of the Napoleonic wars when the family wool business seems to
have failed. He was the uncle of Jacob Wrey Mould, architect, one of the
builders of Central Park in NYC about whom I am writing. George was the
grandfather of Violet Oakley a well known American painter/muralist. He was
a talented painter himself but could not make a living at it. (He had a
large number of dependents -- 8-9 living children plus a half brother's
widow and her 2 children) George was a friend of Samuel F.B. Morse who was
a leader in the group that founded the National Academy of Design in NYC
and George became an associate member of that influential academy the year
after its founding, 1826. (He was not eligible for full membership because
their rules precluded "amateurs")he did not earn his living with his
painting.
Many of the Oakleys were talented artists. George's brother Octavius, who
remained in England, had a career as a watercolor portraitist. His
paintings are still in London's National Gallery. Octavius' daughters and
their daughters were all gifted artists whose paintings are still active in
the art market. I wont go into all the generations of artists right down
to the present.
I do have one further question. I see that the name Acasta is a common one
for ships but cannot find the origins of the name. Do you know?
