Transcriber’s Notes:
* The use of an * indicates an omission or error made by the original recorder.
? The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read due to the
quality of the original document.
The Column headings had been covered over by the original microfilmer and a request of the
National Archives and Records Center confirmed that NARA’s copy was similarly altered (Patrick
Connelly, NARA Archivist in an email to the current transcriber). However, the entries appear
to provide a sound guide to what those Column headings would have been.
The column that apparently listed “occupation” has been eliminated since the preparer of the
original manifest listed everyone, regardless of age and/or gender, as a “Farmer.”
All items of baggage were numbered in alpha letters. However, in order to conserve space, the
words were replaced by a numeric character. The number of items of baggage followed by a
parenthetical mark and by the amount of baggage indicates that that passenger and those who
follow form a group travelling together with that total amount of luggage.
The handwriting in this manifest was of such a quality that letters are not clearly written.
Occasionally, parts of names are not much clearer than if an individual drew a straight line
to represent a signature. To highlight this further, this manifest had already been transcribed
and is located on another website. Nevertheless, the decisions as to various spellings in the
latter transcription differ, sometimes markedly, from the current transcription.
The captain’s name appears to begin with the letter “S” although it resembles an “L.” Within
this manifest, the letter “S” is written in several ways including in the captain’s name. The
letter “L” is not written in the same manner as the letter “S”.

Thank you for providing the transcribed manifest of the Ship Ilzaide which landed in New York on
13 June 1840. On this ship were a number of passengers from the small village of Moos near Buehl
in Baden.
Passengers 50 & 51 - Dionys Kloepfer and his wife Theresa settled in Gross Point, Cook County, Illinois
along with their sons Georg (#52), David (#54), Ludwig (#56), and Anton (#58).
Passenger #53 - Bernhard, son of Dionys, settled in Wilmette, Cook County, Illinois.
Passenger #55 - Mathias, son of Dionys, settled in New Trier, Illinois.
Passenger #57 - Vincent, son of Dionys, settled in Blaine County. Oklahoma.
Passengers #59 & 60 - Benedict (cousin of Dionys) and his wife Maria (Gartner) Kloepfer settled in Carroll County, Ohio.
Passenger #61 - Katherina Kloepfer, sister of Benedict.
Passenger #62 - Theresa Kloepfer, not yet know how she is related.
Passenger #63 - Jacob Kloepfer, nephew of Benedict, settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada.
Passengers #65 - 67 - Possibly Kustners from Moos.
Passenger #68 - Died shortly after arriving in America.
Passengers #73 & 74 - Bernard Ochs (later Oaks) and his wife Martina (Maurath) Ochs settled in Rochester New York.
Passengers #75 - 78 could be Ochs, but are not children of Berhard.
Passenger #84 - Monika Winter, also from Moos, who later in 1840 married Jacob Kloepfer (#63) in Buffalo New York.
Possible related to the other Winters, passenger #79-83.
Passenger #91 - Ferdinand Volz, settled in Monroe County, New York and died before 1860.
Passenger #92 - Michael Volz (later Foltz) settled in Lockport, Niagara County, New York.
Passenger #95 - Michael Kloepfer was a brother of Dionys Kloepfer.
Regards, David Roepke
3 The given name appears to be an abbreviation, Lu or Lv. The surname appears to be either
Rothe, with a line dropping down from the e, or Rothy, which seems unlikely.
7 The given name appears to be an abbreviation, probably for George.
9 The first name has been obliterated. Luggage includes 6 Chests, Bundles & Bed??? The last
item is probably “bedding” although it is illegible. The items are listed here rather than
above in order to save space.
14 The given name appears to be an abbreviation, probably for Christopher.
17 The given name trails off so that there might have been another letter intended.
26 The name appears to be “Zuzane.”
27 The gender is written as M for male, but should be F for female.
30 The second letter is not clear in the manifest.
32 The given name appears to be an abbreviation, probably for Sebastian.
35-36 The passengers have one chest each and most probably bedding, although the letters
after the “B” in bedding are obliterated.
43 The given name appears as provided above. However, the last three letters are not entirely
clear. Even the name transcribed above does not match any common German given name.
45 The last letter of the given name is not clear. It appears to be an uncrossed “t.”
64-67 Possible Kustner (umlaut over U), from Moos.
68 Bernard Burkard from Moos who died shortly after arriving in America
71 The passenger’s age is six months.
75 The name is virtually illegible. It appears to be “Adlehard.”
82 The name is virtually illegible. The first letter might be “J” or “S.”
87 The name is virtually illegible. The identifiable letters are presented above.
93 The third letter of the surname could be an “a.”
100 The letters are illegible and the last name just trails off without identifiable letters.
105 The passenger’s age is clearly 90, rather than 40.
106 The given name is illegible.
116 The last two letters of the given name appear to be “up.”
118 The second letter of the passenger’s given name appears to be an “h.”
120 The third letter of the given name could be an “e.”
124 The handwriting is almost indecipherable, but appears to be as given above.
129 In addition to the passenger’s twenty chests, bags and bedding, there is also another,
illegible item. The items are listed here rather than above in order to save space.
133 The page is creased, but the age appears to be 10. The name of this passenger is the same
as that for passenger 132. It is not a transcription error.
137 The given name could begin with an “A” or an “R.” The name, itself, trails off.
138-139 The geographic areas are illegible and could not be matched against any area that is
presented in the monumental work, “An Atlas of the German Empire.”
140 The last letter of the surname trails off, but appears to be a “z.”
149 The first three letters of the passenger’s given name are clearly “Nic.” However, the
last letters are illegible, but do not appear to be “Nicola,” the given name of the
Passenger 150.
157 The given name may also be “Chols.”
160 The last letter of the surname trails down, but seems to be a “y.”
