Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the transcriber,
or is used to call attention to additional information in the passenger notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the condition of the
manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
^ Indicates letters are omitted and the following letter is superscripted.
* The writer of this list seems to not have had a knowledge of German geography or Ostfriesian
names. He was extremely careless in recording names and places. In fact, when comparing a
German source document against this list it becomes apparent that the manifest is almost useless.
* See the additional information at the end of the list from John Franks and Amy Robbins-Tjaden.
* For almost all of the entries only an initial is used in place of the full given name, and
sometimes this is incorrect (though, many people may have gone by one or their middle given
names).
* Hinrich Ruben of Emden, Ostfriesland in volume 17 of the "Amt Uplengen" books has researched
the list of passengers and has provided a list of names (to replace the use of a single initial
for given names) and the correct names for those who came from Ostfriesland villages (which is
90% of the list). In addition he says: "Since the captain of this ship recorded the passenger
names very carelesslly only a systematic research of dates and church books allows us to
identify the people. The descendents of a number of these families had already contacted me
about the list. It is from them that the indications of deaths (not noted by the captain)
during the passage come. In addition, he (the captain) apparently did not make any effort to
record all the children because numerous infant names are missing from the families listed."
* This voyage lasted 2+ months. The ship left Emden (a city in Ostfriesland on the North Sea
coast) on the 31st of August or the 1st of September, 1857. Apparently there was an outbreak
of cholera on the voyage (see correspondent's information below) and 19 people died.

I also have a family that arrived on the Gerhard, Bremen to New Orleans 6 Nov 1857.
Gerd Aden Rieken, his wife Nantke and baby Johann also made this
voyage. His bio in the Iroquois County, IL history book is below.
He and his wife were from Schirum and attended the church at Weene.
>From Portrait and Biographical History of Iroquois County, IL 1893
GEORGE A. REAKIN is a retired farmer residing in Danforth. He is a
native of Germany, born in Hanover, February 9, 1833, and is a son of
Claus and Nancy (Aden) Reakin, both natives of the same country. He
grow to manhood in Germany, received a good education in his native
tongue, and acquired his English education after coming to this
country. In 1855, he married Cassie Saathoff, also a native of Hanover.
In 1857, the young couple took ship at Oldenburg for New Orleans. The
ship was a sailing vessel and they were three months on the voyage,
during which time cholera broke out on board the ship and nineteen of
the passengers died. They arrived at New Orleans November 4, 1857, and
at once went up the river to St. Louis and thence to Peoria, where Mr.
Reakin spent about fifteen months, doing such odd jobs of work as he
could find to do. When he landed in America he had about $700 in gold,
which he deposited in a bank, and every dollar of which he lost by its
suspension. But he was not disheartened, continued on with his work,
and soon accumulated a small sum and rented a farm in Livingston County,
where he remained for about eight years. In 1866, he removed to
Danforth Township, Iroquois County, where he purchased one hundred and
sixty acres of prairie land and ten acres of timber land, paying down
but a very small part of the purchase money. Now came the struggle of
his life-first to free the land from debt and then to place himself and
family in comfortable circumstances for life. Success has crowned his
efforts and he is now the owner of three farms, all of which are under a
good state of cultivation.
Mr. and Mrs. Reakin are the parents of nine children who grew to
maturity: Nancy, now the wife of Mrs. Johnson, of Danforth; John, a
farmer of this county; Claus, who resides in Minnesota; Seve, wife of
Frank Wanths, of Ashkum; Sarah, wife of Eno Flessner; Rachel, wife of
John Lottman; George, Eddie and Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Reakin are members
of the Lutheran Church. Politically, he is a Democrat.

I also had ancestors on the Gerhard. Germans to America Vol 12 Nov 1857-Jul 1859:
two of the passangers listed on this ship were LUDEMANN, H. (a 24 year old male farmer)
and LUDEMANN, G. (his 23 year old wife).
The next person on the list is SAUGERMANN, H. an 18 year old farmer.
I believe, given the names and ages and family stories, that these people are
Heinrich Heyen and Gesina Margaretha Hinrichs SEGGERMANN LUDEMANN,
The "Saugermann" who is next on the list is likely the youngest brother of Gesina,
Heinrich SEGGERMANN.
Heinrich and Gesina SEGGERMANN LUDEMANN settled in Woodford Co, Illinois where descendents
of theirs still live today.
