* 15 month period for 1832 and 1850; 9 month period for 1843.
Year ending Sept. 30, 1820-32; Dec. 31, 1833-43; Sept. 30, 1844-50;
Dec. 31, 1851. San Francisco unavailable for 1851-1853.
The port figures include foreign travelers as well as immigrants
since the two were not segregated in the annual federal reports
until 1856. The statistics by port are adapted from the Treasury
Dept., Bureau of Statistics, Tables showing Arrivals of Alien Passengers and Immigrants in the US from 1820 to 1888.
The figures by nationalities arriving at New York from 1847 to 1860,
the boom years of immigration, include immigrants alone and are
derived from the Annual Reports of the Commissioners of Emigration of the State of New York from 1847 to 1860. The periods do not exactly coincide, as the latter are based on the claendar year throughout, whereas the federal figures were based on the year ending September 30 until 1851 and thereafter the calendar year.
