TWO MASTERS SENTENCED
Duarte and Neves Guilty in Alien Case

Joaquin C. Duarte and Elizeu Neves, masters of sailing vessels from the
Cape Verde Islands to New Bedford pleaded guilty of the charge of
smuggling aliens and today were sentenced to serve a year and a day in the
New Bedford Jail by Judge Brewster in the United States Court.
Duarte went to trial yesterday and the Government presented its case.
The trial was to have resumed this morning, but Duarte pleaded guilty.
Neves' trial was scheduled to follow that of Duarte but when the latter
changed to a plea of guilty, Neves did the same. Sentences were then
imposed.
In the case of Duarte his vessel arrived at New Bedford sometime ago
with a crew of 28 men, at least half of whome the Government alleged were
aboard simply to be smuggled into the United States. Passage arrangements
were made on Pogo Island of the Cape Verde Islands and sums ranging from
$150 to $250 were paid by the aliens to an agent at Pogo. Eight were
captured of the 16 believed to have escaped ashore from Duarte's ship.
