Transcriber's Notes:
A hand written Cover Page contains the following information:
2 Feby 1832
Manifest
Ship Robert Morris
Singers
Fortune Island
The date on this Cover Sheet is approximatly one year later than the manifest.
Both dates are printed very clearly. There is no explanation for the
difference.
The ship is listed as having arrived 1832 since it was copied from the
reel containing other 1832 ships.
Passenger numbers added to aid with referencing.
This ship carried mostly cargo, with only three passengers.
As nearly as I can figure, Fortune Island is located in the Bahamas.
Fortune Island was a transfer point for ships carrying cargo from England
to North and South America.
Columbus was supposed to have landed here on one of his journeys.
In 1783 plantation owners began growing cotton here with about 1200 slaves.
By 1800 there were 40 plantations.
Due to bad soil and economic reasons the cotton industry failed.
* - There is nothing in the Marks column and just check marks for each item in the Numbers
Exclusive column.
* - There was no information as to age, where they came from or where they intended to go.
* - Thos. is believed to be an abbreviation of Thomas
* - Word is spelled beaf - meaning beef
* - Word is spelled drye - meaning dry
* - cont means containing
* - Word is spelled dozend - meaning dozen
1. This Report & Manifest has been placed at the beginning of the listing, although on
the original manifest it was placed last.
2. NONE of the blank spaces were filled in. It is shown so the reader can see what the
Captain had to go through if he carried mainly cargo instead of passengers.
3. The first part of the Manifest was barely legible. This is why large groups of words
are not discernable. The second part was fairly readable, but the print was very small.
4. I have placed '__________' in places where an entry should have been entered.
5. The common "?" was used to denote any letters in a word that were illegible. The length
of the words was an educated guess in some instances.
