I, Paul Himes, Master of the Ship Revenue, do solemnly, sincerely and truely swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed to me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect list of all the passengers taken on board of the said ship at (blank) from which port said ship has now arrived; and that on said list is truely designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truely sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who died, so help me God. Transcriber's Notes:
- This was a particularly difficult list to transcribe because the author
seldom lifted his pen between names or words. Thus, it is difficult to
make out many of the letters because they are intermixed with 'drag
lines'.
- The captains signature appears three times and his first name is very
clearly Paul. Much as I would like to believe that I transcribed his
surname correctly as HIMES, it is possible that this is in error.
Signature varies too much and under scanner, I was unsure.
- The part of the ship occupied is only written twice for the helvind???
and once for leal. It is dittoed throughout the list. I posted a query
to the members of TSL as to the translation of 'leal' and 'helvind???'
and only received one speculation. The closest Dutch translation
helvind is helvede. The writing on the manifest really looks like
helvindere. The term may well be Dutch or German considering that the
ship embarked from Rotterdam.
- The occupation of passenger #28 may be carpenter. It is difficult to
make out the letters.
- The occupation of passender #34 may well be Gardener. The only letter
that appears on the manifest is the 'd' which is centered. The manifest
is marred in that particular spot.
- The name of passenger #68 is completely illegible. The manifest is torn
in that area.
- Passenger #53 is listed as a male.... this is likely an error.
