ON BOARD THE OPAWA

OCT 3rd 1878

We sailed away From Plymouth Bay
All full of Life and Glee
But low before we sailed a Month
A man was Drowned at Sea

This poor unfortunate man was sent
To tie the Vessel side
He sliped is foot and down he went
Into the Foaming Tide

And low the Crew stood on the Deck
As merry as they could be
When quick the Cry was raised aloud
A man was gone in the Sea

Our noble Captin stood on Deck
And gave his Strict Comand
While every Officer on Bourd
Worked with a SkilfulHand

I never shall forget the Man
As he looked up at me
His look was one that plainly said
Send out a boat for me

The boat was lowerd, the Life Boys tossed
But with all it Proved in Vain
His life was gone, his Body Lost
But we Trust in Heaven, his sole will reign

We give praise to Mr Scrubey our Second Mate
And too those Sailers here
Who in the Boat did venture out
To seek for one they loved so dear

No Dowt our Sailers feel it much
To loose their brother Dear
As in the Sea his Body Droped
We prayed the God would draw him near

He as no wife to mourn his loss
No Children to come near
But yet his Parents he as left Behind
To mourn for him they loved so Dear

SEPT 1878

1

On the Seventh of Sept so jolley and free
We Started from England New Zealand to see
We sailed from Plymouth in the Ship Opawa
Not knowing that we Should see England no more

2

We Sailed away with the Captin and Crew
Which I understood were forty and two
Shes a very fine Ship and she Skiped ore the waves
And to all upon Satisfaction she gave

3

On the Day that she sailed I felt very sick
That I did not Expect for I was so Wick
But we laid upon Deck like Sheep to the Slaughter
All through the sight of a little Salt Water

4

We had three Hundred on Board and more
Not Many of them had seen the Sea before
Most of us were Sick, I was sick four days
Its a Very bad feeling so most people say

5

We had Good Winds and Sailed very Well
But it makes us feel bad when the Waters did swell
On the 9th of September we captured a Shark
And with this big fish we had a Good Lark

6

Board this brave vessel we had plenty to eat
We had Rice, Bread  Pea Soup Potatoes and Meat
And had Flour and Sugar and Treacle and Plums
We did not expect this when we thought to come
He made us Plum Puddings and ate them for tea
Such diets as these they just suit me
On Sunday 15th we had Praying and Preaching
And reading Church Service and Sabbath school teaching
These labors we hope will be perfectly Blest
And Guide Many Souls to the Haven of Best
Thi for the Souls of our fellows we crave
And bring them to Jesus who only can save
To help us to praise him for what he has done
He as kept us quite Safe from the Billowing Foam
Every day of our lives his Name we will Bless
Of his mercy and Goodness we'll Confess
As we gazed o'er the side of the vesell so brave
And Cast a look down on the large swelling waves
We saw fish in the Water like stars that did shine
Made bey the Hand of Him Whose Divine

7

We came on the side of the Bay of Biscay
And then next we enterd the Western Sea
And then we pass through the Tropics so warm
But all through the month we had never a storm

8

O we are still trusting his Blesed Word
And we are quite Sure our prayers are heard
And the prayers of our friends which we've left behind
And God has been merciful gracious and kind
Pray on for our Welfare and we'll pray for you
And While we are Blest may you be Blest too
Blessed be God the Father for Goodness and grace
Who sent his Son Jesus to die for our race

9

On the 3rd of October as I must record
We heard the Sad Cry of a Man Overboard
We cast out some Boys and Lowerd the Boats
And soon out on the water afloat
We let go the ropes and we pulled up the Sails
But to Rescue the man we did utterly fail

10

He we called Charles Johnson for that was his name
He talked of his forture he talked of his fame
This was the last voage he intended to make
And if he'd returned he'd some money to take
But the Sailers so Gallant the sailers so brave
He is lost he is perished beneath the Blue Wave

11

This fortune of his he left to another
Some of his friends either sister or brother
In a Moment of time he was taken away
We ought to be ready for we no not the day
When we might be called away in our Bloom
And hurried away to the dark silent tomb
O May we this moment make Jesus our Choice
And then land in Heaven to hear his sweet voice

Tues DEC 3rd Still Head Winds.  A very wet night.  Kept between deck all day.  Almost becalmed.

Wend DEC 4th A most lovely day.  We were able to sit on the poop most of the Day.  Only waiting for a favourable wind but we are becalmed.

Thurs DEC 5th Another lovely day, but a Head Wind.  We are greatly disapointed as we have a few miles to go.  At 4 O'Clock in the Afternoon we get a fair wind.  The Captin gives orders for us to put our things togather.  The Wind changes into a Head Wind.  Such preparations for landing with us, till the lights are put out.

Friday 6th A nice morning.  Very calm.  What wind we have is a Head Wind.  We are quite prepared for the inspecters top come on Board.  We have a Mountain called Banks Peninsular in our view all day.  The Captin says he as been looking for it for the past seven days.  The Wind is very much against us.  The Ship as been turned a many times today.  On the poop most of the day.  Rather a cold afternoon.
