I, H. W. Exter, Master or Commander of the ship Olbers, do solemnly, sincerely and truly swear that the within List, signed by me and now delivered to the Collector of this District, contains the names of all the Passengers, taken on board the said Ship at the Port of Bremen or at any time since, and that all matters therein set forth are, according to the best of my knowledge and belief, just and true. I do further swear that two of the said Passengers have died on the voyage, and that 3 were born whose names are not entered. Sworn before me, this eighth day of December 1836, (signature illegible) Collector.
A list of all passengers on board the Olbers, whereof H. W. Exter is Master, from Bremen bound for New Orleans, burthen 889 tons.
Columns represent: name; age; sex; occupation; country to which they belong; country in which they intend to become inhabitants. Most of the passengers were listed as farmers, and most were from Germany. All were intending to become inhabitants of the United States. Only the three who were merchants, and the ones from England will be noted here. The rest were all farmers from Germany.

Bremen Octobr. 4th 1836 for J. D. Ludering, Shipbroker
Transcriber's footnotes:
Anna Muhlenkamp and Henry Unewehr both were recorded on the
manifest as having died on the voyage. There was another death
on board which was not recorded on this manifest. This was
found in a journal kept by one of the other passengers and passed
down to a descendant of that passenger.
According to the journal of Gerhard Hageman who was a passenger
on this voyage, Adelheid Pieper (Bieber on this list) gave birth
to another daughter in mid-November. Anna Maria Adelheid
(born Bunte) Pieper was born in 1813 in Halen, Hannover.
Adelheid's parents were Johann Henrich Bunte who died in 1824 in
Delfshafen bei Rotterdam, Holland, and Helena Adelheit zum Beel.
Bernard Pieper was born in 1811 in Wirpum, Hannover. Bernard Pieper
and Adelheid Bunte were married in Menslage in 1833. Adelheid Pieper
died about two weeks out from New Orleans, near the island of Santo
Domingo. On 21 November 1836, Gerhard Hageman reported "With tears
in my eyes, I must report that during the night Bernhard Pieper's
wife has passed away into eternity, and today at mid-day she will
be buried in her grave in the waves of the Carribean Sea."
The journal also mentions the villages of origin of some friends of
Gerhard Hageman who had preceeded him to America. He mentions
Mr. Meyer, "the bookbinder's son from Badbergen", Diedrich Kamper
from Ohrte, who was leaving for Louisville with Hermann Hammermann,
his brother Gerhard Hammermann who was already in St. Louis, and
Hermann Borcherding from Vehs "who had arrived the previous Friday
from New York."
Gerhard Hageman was from the village of Bottorf, near Menslage.
He was traveling with a group from the Menslage area, who were heading
for St. Charles, Missouri. Among the others were the Piepers, Siefers
(probably Siebers on this list), Kruken, Rotthaus (Rothhaus here),
Beckebrede, Sandforth, Stumborg, Renken, and Mohlenkamp. Several of
these were "going to the plantation for a few months to earn quite a
lot of money" though Renken was leaving for St. Louis immediately.
The Mohlenkamps were from Andorf, though Hermann, or Hy. here, was
born in Talge, according to the journal, and his daughter died
2 November 1836 on board ship.
Gerhard Hageman stayed for less than a year in Missouri, and returned
to his home village in Germany where he married Anna Margarethe Bertlage
in May of 1843. He died in August 1843. Gerhard's daughter was born
in 1844, after his death.
(All information and all quotes on the Piepers, Gerhard Hageman and the
others from the Menslage area has been found in the letters of Gerhard
Hageman, which were published by Charles and Karen Hofmann, copyright 1998.)
The Kosters, or Koesters, on board this ship, were the ancestors of this
transcriber. The home village of the Koesters has not yet been located
in Hannover. Henry (or Herman) Kosters, his wife Gertrud (born Sommer),
son Henry age 2, and 2 others who it is assumed were the father and sister
of the elder Henry, all were traveling to St. Charles, Missouri, where
they arrived in April 1837, after making their way up the Mississippi
River by steam-boat. The Kosters were not among the group of Menslagers.
The following surnames were written with umlauts: Honert, Hackemoller,
?ohle, Hakemuller, Kosters, Kottinger, Kleinhagmuller, Bulde.
#8 there was no surname given for Anna Marie, but presumably she was
one of the Hartlages.
#18 second letter in abbreviation of first name could have been
c, e, or i.
#28 first name written with one n, and horizontal line over the n.
#34 first letter could have been H or K.
#42 Anna Muhlenkamp died on the voyage.
#55-58 letter could be F or J.
#71 same as #28.
#72-76 Kosters spelled with umlaut over o. Also spelled in other records as
Koester.
#87-88 it appears that the name Theile was written over the name
Brocker. Wm. Brocker or Theile was either 25 or 55.
#143-145 this name was actually Pieper.
#154-156 letter could be F or J.
#222 written as Hallmann.
#264 same as #28.
#333 the age could have been 14 or 24.
#344 there was only a line drawn through the occupation column, not ditto marks
for farmer.
#350 was either 16 or 76.
#352 it is possible that Henry Kreeling was from England, not Germany.
#354 first letter could have been L or Z.
Correspondence May 13, 2002 passenger #141 Schweers
Passenger #141 was Elise Schweers. I do not know as yet if she is the one
that will connect me to a Frank A. and Gertrude Schweers (Brother and
Sister) from Borken, Westphalia. They had an aunt named Elise, who came
to America about this time. If you are researching this family please
contact LEONARD STONESTREET
Correspondence May 21, 2002 passengers #196-200 and #205-207 Haafkemeyer
I think I can identify the Hafkemeyer family from Reichelsheim, Hesse, to
St. Louis.
John Conrad Hafkemeyer born 1782; Catherine c. 1796; William c. 1835; Franz
born 1822; Charles (this person not on my list); Wilhelmine c. 1822; Sophie
born 12 Mar 1830.
