Correspondence 11/27/02 passengers #50-53 Spenelly/Spensley
I am certain that the family
50 Anthony Spenelly 29 Male Minor England
51 Ann Spenelly 29 Female England
52 Willim Spenelly 23 Male England
53 Sarah Spenelly 2 Female England
is that of Anthony Spensley, his wife Ann, brother William and daughter
Sarah.
I'm not a direct descendant of Anthony, but all the Spensleys of
Wensleydale and Swaledale are ultimately linked. I do however,
have contact with descendants, and have gathered quite a bit of
information about the family. I have a copy of a newspaper
article written about the house he built on Delhi Street in
Dubuque. More recently however, I obtained the obituary of his
wife, Ann.....She died 5 Mar 1893 and details included, "TRULY A PIONEER
Death of Mrs. Ann Spensley, Aged 93, Who Came to Dubuque
Fifty-nine Years Ago."
In fact, the only item on the manifest which is not exactly in
line with this family, is Ann's age in 1834. I have her as bapt
1800 which is consistent with her age at death. Maybe the
recorder just made an error when she left England.
Anthony Spensley was bapt. 9 Jun 1804 at Grinton in Swaledale -
father Ralph.
Wife Ann was d/o Obadiah Whitehead.
They were married 4 Jul 1831 at Grinton.
Daughter Sarah was bapt 14 Mar 1832 at Grinton. I understand she
died in her teens.
Other children were born in America.
Anthony's obituary as stated in the Dubuque County Times, 17 Jul
1880 states,
"Anthony Spensley, well known to the people of Dubuque county,
died yesterday at the ripe old aged of 77 years. Deceased came
to this country 46 years ago, and has been engaged the greater
part of his life in mining. He was born at Swelldale, county of
Yorkshire, England. He leaves a wife and three grown up
children, one daughter, Mrs Ralph Fawcett, and two sons, Ralph
and William. The funeral takes place Sunday at 2 o'clock from
the late residence in West Dubuque."
There is also a William named as passenger on the North
Star......Anthony had a brother William bapt 22 Jun 1811 at
Grinton. The William on your manifest shows age as 23......
Anthony had a brother John, who immigrated around same year,
again first to Philadelphia, then moved to Potosi. This John
returned eventually to England......I have copy of entries John
made in his diary on that return, at which time he took home sums
of money from Anthony and William to their mother and to
Anthony's in-laws (the original diary is in Loras College, Dubuque).
