Correspondence General Help
Some notes for you to pass on to Ms. Heard. If the handwriting she had
to work with is anything like I've seen in older documents it's a wonder
she made out anything, much less her frustration in knowing that
Wisconsin is misspelled and having to list it as shown. My, what a
trouper!
Now, my first clue in seeing the SS Neptune Dec. 1860 list was the town
name of Misteck. I knew this was the German spelling for Místek (accent
over the i), Moravia. Following these came the town of Frankstadt and
later, Franzstadt. I immediately checked with the ShtetlSeeker and my
suspicion was right. Frankstadt was the German spelling for Frenštát
(upside down circumflex over the s, accent over the a), Moravia. Then
there was the town of Freiburg. I knew I'd seen a town in Moravia with a
similar German spelling. I checked, using the spelling "Freiberg," and
located Príbor (upside down circumflex over the r, accent over the i),
Moravia. To confirm this, I used the ShtetlSeeker's mileage calculator
and discovered that all three villages were within 10 miles of each
other.
As to surnames, I felt certain that MATULA, MORIS, NICKEL, MARIANE &
HERMIS, were fairly accurate (given the times the the level of literacy).
CUBASCH appeared to be a Germanic spelling but I wasn't sure whether it
was Kubaš or Kuboš. I happened to have a copy of "Emigration to Texas
From the Mistek District Between 1856 and 1900" by Drahomir Strnadel,
published by the Czech Heritage Society of Texas 1996, Victoria, Texas.
To my surprise, there was only one page, page 45, for the years
1859-1860. But this page had two interesting entries. A Václav (Wenzel)
Kuboš, cottager of Mistek with 900 guldens, emigrated with a total of 7
people in his group. And, a František (Franz) Hermis, cottager of Horní
Sklenov (in the Frydek-Mistek District) with 320 guldens, emigrated with
7 in his party. When I compared the ship's list there were 7 people in
the Wenzel Cubasch party and 5 in the Fanz Hermis party.
As to other suspect Czech surnames in the list: Holup (most likely
Holub), Kutasch (possibly Kutaš) and Shanack (possibly Šanak). When I
have a moment I will try to find out what the native spelling would be
for these 3 names.
I hope this is of some help to you.
