I, John Collins do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear, that the within Report and List, subscribed with my name, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the district of Mississippi contains, to the best of my knowledge and belief, the names, age, sex, and occupation of all the passengers, together with the name of the country to which they severally belong, and that of which they intend to become inhabitants, which were on board the Ship Mozart whereof I am at present Master, at the time of her sailing from the Port of Havre de Grace or which have at any time since been taken on board said vessel. And I do likewise swear, that all matters whatsoever in said Report and List expressed, are, to the best of my knowledge and belief, just and true. It appears that this voyage arrived September 15, 1836 not 1826 as is stated on the
manifest. We have listed under each date to assure all researchers find this ship.
In this list, Germans were listed as from Baden, Wurtemberg, or as Bavarians.
All passengers were listed, using ditto marks, as having an occupation, even
the infants and children.
Passenger numbers added to aid with referencing.
38-40, 45 The surname "Dorne", in all cases, had an accent grave on the final "e".
56-63 The transcriber was unable to determine if "Carl" was the surname of Franz or if
his name was "Franz Carl Wurtz". Therefore, all the family of Franz Carl
have been also referenced as Wurtz.
73 The name is female, but listed as male
111 The name is female, but listed as male
113 Bernard, Marian - Female written in, crossed out, with a tiny "M" above written
in. It was spelled Marian, not the masculine Marion.
139-143 Le?mann looks like either Lebmann or Lehmann.
154 Spelled Babtiste, probably should be Baptiste
164-170 The last seven were summarily listed as cabin passengers in the remarks column.
Correspondence 10/27/01 passenger SCHWAB
George Schwab and his family emigrated from the area near Pirmasens in
present day Rheinland-Pfalz in the southwestern corner of Germany. I have a
record that their voyage was 55 days, which means that if they arrived in
New Orleans on 15 September 1836, they left Le Havre on July 23rd.
The family stayed in New Orleans for the winter of 1836. They traveled up
the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to near Cincinnati by boat in the Spring of
1837. They settled in Millville, Ohio and farmed. George died in 1856 and
is buried in the local cemetery. His wife Susan is buried under her maiden
name of FISCHER nearby; she died in 1875. Fred Juergens
